Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Messner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Messner.

Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Hello! I am proud to say I’m a Phoenix native and the owner of Lovebug Lash Lounge. My job is to help people look and feel even more beautiful!

Ever since I was a little girl, I have been deeply fascinated by the beauty industry. I started playing with makeup at a very young age. It has always helped me feel more confident and more me. I decided to go into cosmetology during my last two years of high school. And by the age of 18, I received my cosmetology license.

My sister had been doing eyelash extensions for a few years at that point, and I started working at the same salon later that year. She was really my best teacher and has always been my biggest supporter. I quickly fell in love with the art of eyelash extensions!

I am so fortunate to have met so many wonderful people. And it is my passion to accentuate their beauty and brighten their days!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is not easy when you are first starting out. It takes months to build up speed, and at least a couple years for quality. Not every client coming to see you, takes that into consideration. I have had very hard days, beating myself up for not pleasing everyone. But I have had even more amazing days, surrounded by kind and patient clients who understood that I tried my absolute best every day. And for both, I am grateful. Without the difficult days, and loving support; I would not be where I am today.

It is also hard working for people who might not appreciate all you can do. But truthfully, I like to view those experiences not in a negative light, but more of a positive one. Because again, I would not have become who I am today without those hurdles. Being told that I shouldn’t start my own business and that it would be too difficult for me, in turn, really pushed me to grow and strive for better.

I learned to not get comfortable with the same mundane routine, just barely scraping by despite being really busy with my workload. I finally realized after so many empty promises, and small paychecks, that no matter where I went, I was capable of so much more. And that if I wanted to grow as a professional, I needed to move on, and start my own business!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an eyelash extension technician! That means I enhance my clients eyelashes by applying a synthetic lash on top of a natural lash. Each extension is individually placed!

It is very important to thoroughly isolate throughout the appointment. Without proper isolation, it will cause the client irritation and it will damage their natural lashes. Unfortunately, it is fairly common for this crucial step to be neglected when extensions are applied. So I take pride in being meticulous when it comes to making sure I take the time to properly isolate my work!

There are a few different sets to choose from. Classic, volume, or a hybrid set. Classic is a natural mascara look, where one lash extension is glued to one natural lash. Volume is a lighter extension, but with multiple lashes per natural lash. Each volume fan is handmade! This gives my clients a more dramatic, and fluffy look. Hybrid is a mix of volume and classic lashes. Not too full, and not too natural!

To this day, I continue to better myself and my work to guarantee that my clients are happy. My goal is to be the best at what I do!  On that journey, I have learned a proven method to create a better look, feel, and hold for my clients lashes. It matters to me that every client gets their best lash look. I take into account many things, like my clients eye and face shape. I am looking to create the perfect style for their face!

I think something that sets me apart from others is that I genuinely want to make a connection with every client. We don’t have to talk throughout the entire appointment, or at all if they don’t want to. But I want even new clients to trust me, feel safe with me, and enjoy coming to their future appointments.

Joining this industry has really helped me to come out of my shell. As I had a really hard time opening up in the past, and was actually quite shy. I love that I have grown so much on a personal level, while also improving in something that I have come to be so passionate about.

Every day at my salon, it starts to feel more like home. I find joy in little things to improve the vibe of my salon. Such as, adding new items, moving things around, changing scents, and making new music playlists. I no longer dread waking up and having to go to work. It hardly feels like a job anymore because I truly enjoy it. I get to wake up, get dressed, and basically come hang out with friends while I make them feel even more beautiful than they already are.

I am beyond grateful to have opened Lovebug Lash Lounge. I love and adore all of the incredible people I have had the pleasure to meet and befriend while doing their lashes. I would have never had the opportunity to, had I not taken the chance, and dove into the unknown.

It is my beautiful clientele and my family who have helped encourage me, and made this dream come true.
