Will, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m the Principal and Owner of Newman’s Financial Planning. After years in the financial industry, I started my own firm because I’ve seen all sides of the industry and never felt clients were treated fairly. I want to be able to give families and individual’s financial freedom and wealth without a large company overhead and hidden costs. I act as a fee-only fiduciary, which means by law I am required to act in the clients’ best interest. Most financial advisors are not fiduciaries, so why would you entrust them with your hard-earned money knowing they are receiving commissions, kickbacks and incentives with your money – the mostly hidden costs that you incur. Integrity is a fundamental value for Newman’s Financial Planning. I’m passionate about helping people like you manage their wealth in the most profitable way possible. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been the normal struggles of starting any business with regards to turning a profit. I would say over the past 18 months the biggest hurdle I have had to overcome is how young I am. Many retirees and investors feel that you must have grey hair to know what you are talking about as an advisor. I have overcome this by asking the question, “Would you rather hire a 65 year old advisor that charges you double and is lagging the market return year in and year out”? I explain how nobody comes close to my attention to detail and how quickly I get back to clients. I truly love what I do and I know that comes across is conversations with clients.
Newman’s Financial Planning – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Newman’s Financial Planning adheres to the Fiduciary standard. I am a “Fee-Only” Registered Investment Advisor. Fee-Only means we do not charge any commissions or receive kickbacks from any company or individual. I am dedicated to providing investment management and strategic wealth planning to each of my clients. Simply put, I strive to be my client’s trusted advisor. As a financial advisory firm, my primary focus is to provide unbiased opinions that are designed to achieve long term investment results – that put your financial interests first.
I specialize in building high quality, low cost portfolios that give all clients the best chance at investment success. We really take the time to understand the clients overall picture and with this include comprehensive financial planning at no additional cost. In addition, 100% of the compensation I earn comes from the clients so there is never a conflict of interest. I would say less than 2% of all advisors can say this. I also save my clients a lot of money in annual advisory fees because I don’t have any overhead or a fancy office which the clients is ultimately paying for. This on top of amazing customer service is what sets Newman’s Financial Planning apart from everyone else.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment has honestly been the last 18 months since I have been in business on my own. I set out to change the industry and make a positive impact by truly putting the clients’ interests first. It boils my blood when I receive statements from prospective clients and I see what their previous advisor has them invested in. 99% of the time it is all about the advisor and how much they can squeeze out of their clients. I feel so proud when I can save clients thousands of dollars while running a business that I love! Nothing is better than sitting down with a client and really building a strong relationship while showing them how much they can save!
