Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Wenger McPhaul.
Jessica got her to start making costumes for a small youth theatre in Arizona when she was 16. A few years later, she moved to LA to attend fashion school at FIDM and has been working steadily in film/tv ever since. She started out as an assistant costume designer, she quickly progressed to costume designer for films and tv. Some of her most notable film and tv projects have been House of Cards and Dancing with the stars. She has worked with such companies as Netflix, Apple, Reebok, Nike, Indian Motorcycle and Top Golf. Projects have taken her all over the country for work from Seattle, New Orleans, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, California and most recently Baltimore.
She has been in both the Costume Designers Guild and the Costumers Union for over a decade. Her work can also be seen on screens, in print, as well as digitally and she considers herself extremely lucky to be a part of the House Of Cards team that has received an Emmy Nomination and back to back Costume Designers Guild Award Nominations.
While planning her wedding back in 2014, she and her soon to be husband Jay McPhaul ran into a roadblock. There were no good options for menswear. A fashionable and well fitting tuxedo at a great price just didn’t exist. The only option was a big box men’s store- and they knew they could do better. So, with all of her costume design contacts and brand relationships, they were able to create Heywood & Ringo. They have been helping couples create their custom look for their big day ever since-staying true to the philosophy of “own your big day- not rent it.”
They show clients how to take their own measurements, pick their fabric and lining and add custom details to their suits. “We are so lucky to have been able to help so many people with their special day. We have been apart of weddings from California to Washington D.C, and have helped men and women truly treasure their big day.” Heywood & Ringo is based in Arizona, but they can design and deliver to weddings all over the country.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Owning a small business and having to relocate across the country multiple times has always been tough. But we’re pretty used to it now and try to grow wherever we are planted.
Working in film and TV requires mental, emotional, and physical strength. Very long hours, lotsof creative energy and a lot of sacrifices away from your family are required. We are so lucky to be able to be back in Arizona as our little family and be able to grow our business here, We are a husband and wife team- its just us as Heywood & Ringo, so we are able to spend time with each and our clients and help them create their dream look. It’s so rewarding but also challenging bc we can’t ever turn it off. We have a three-year-old and a nine-month-old, that take up so much of our bandwidth- so we tend to spend late nights creating the custom suits.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In the multiple fields I have worked in I’ve found that women are the most awful to each other. I don’t know how or when that started, but I know it has to stop. We need to lift each other up with respect and value. If something is wrong and can be better- don’t stand for it. Help be the change for good and inspire growth. We can constructively critique one another with respect, as well as fix problems and grow.
