Meet Pauline Martinez of Perk Eatery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pauline Martinez.

Pauline, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the restaurant business, my father has owned restaurants since before I was born. I opened my first restaurant in Michigan in 2004 at the age of 25. Six months later, I opened a second location. Restaurants are a difficult business to be in – so I swore them off forever! After deciding to move to Arizona in 2007, I sold both locations to pursue a career in my field of study, which was Real Estate, Architecture and Interior Design. I swore off the restaurant. We all know what happened in 2008 with the recession. At that point, my son was very young and my husband and I decided that both of jobs were taking too much of our time and freedom, so we decided to our own venture so we could control more of our time. Since we both had restaurant backgrounds it was only natural for us to follow that path. Perk was born in 2010 and we’ve never looked back! We loved becoming a part of the Kierland local scene and being the place where everyone knows your name!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not a smooth road. We opened in 2010 at the very bottom of the recession and it was brutal. We poured all of our savings and borrowed money from my parents to open Perk Eatery. We didn’t have money to advertise so we grew very organically, by word of mouth. Slowly we started gaining the attention of the local media through our social media efforts and word started to spread that we were a little gem in a strip mall.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Perk Eatery – what should we know?
PERK is a family owned operation with parent roots in the mid-west. Three generations of restauranteurs have carried family recipes and a true love for good, stick to the ribs food to the wild west. The very best promise we can give to our patrons is that we will cook and create for you with the same love and quality we share with our own families. We have a passion for fresh, local and organic foods- so we always try to use as much of that as possible. We make EVERYTHING from scratch and take tremendous pride in the quality of our product.

The PERK family is passionately devoted to preserving the quality of our surrounding community, so enjoy your experience dining with us while knowing that a portion of our proceeds is put back into many charitable and community organizations.

In 2011, we were named “Best of the Valley” in Phoenix Magazine for our pancakes- those pancakes have a cult-like following. Then, in 2013 we were featured on the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives. That was a very proud moment for us.

What sets us apart is our dedication to using the absolute best products possible. We absolutely refuse to compromise the quality of our food even if it affects our bottom line. We are also known for our friendly and speedy service. If you sit in Perk long enough you’ll notice that we can greet more than half of our patrons by name. As a Midwesterner, that says a lot.
