Meet Nantale Muwonge of Black Girl PR™

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nantale Muwonge.

Hi Nantale, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been in the content space for over 20 years. In high school, I was headhunted for a Junior Editor position at a national newspaper. It was so dope! Imagine being a teenager with a press pass?! I basically had unlimited access to events, I got paid for my copy (back when they paid you per word!) and photography, and I got to meet people who were doing incredible things. I was hooked and I’ve never looked back!

I went on to have a successful career in print (as a writer and editor), radio (as on-air talent, a DJ and a producer), PR (as a media liaison and PR specialist), and digital marketing (as a content strategist and digital strategist).

A couple of years after moving to the States, I landed my dream job (at the time!) as an editor for an online women’s magazine. It was a cool gig for a while, but then it was acquired and new management started mass firings to trim the fat so they could resell the company at a profit. I took that as my cue to pivot!

That’s when I got heavy into PR, leveraged what I knew about being in the editor’s seat to score some good coverage for the company I was working for at the time. I still have a copy of an industry publication that we got the front cover for!

Then I made the switch to digital marketing. Producing some viral content over the years got me interested in how people find content and what actually moves them to action. I thrived in this space, in particular producing content for clients that quickly earned the no. 1 spot in search engine results.

Ranking no. 1 on Google can be a game-changer, so when the pandemic hit and I started seeing how Black-owned businesses were disproportionately closing their doors because they aren’t supported, I realized that I could make a real difference by helping them build up their online presence.

And that’s how Black Girl PR™ was born. So now I help Black womxn in e-commerce curate content that gets publicity and media coverage, so they reach more people and have a bigger impact.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it’s definitely been a wild journey but I’ve gotten some valuable lessons out of it. Looking back a lot of those job situations were pretty toxic. From daily microaggressions to blatant racism, being gaslit by HR and management (who were usually equally ignorant), grind and hustle culture that led to me burning out a couple of times…I’ve got some stories!

But then I was in a car accident that radically shifted my priorities and what I was willing to tolerate, so when it came time to walk away from corporate America, I was fine with it.

And as I’m building my business, that experience is always at the front of my mind because it’s the opposite of what I want Black Girl PR™ to be. I think you can be effective and successful at business without stepping on people’s necks.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
