Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Coghlan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My first career-building experience came from working for the University of Arizona’s student newspaper, the Daily Wildcat. I’ve always had a love for writing, especially about college sports. It was a great role for me, but I didn’t have plans to continue on with a career in journalism. I worked with a couple agencies after college and gained some valuable marketing experience. But, the “W-2 job” life was not working out for me for a number of different reasons. I took what I learned and hired myself, starting my entrepreneurial journey with a digital marketing agency. That is how Backcourt Marketing was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not. It took hitting what I thought might be “rock bottom”… more than once. After losing a job, I remember thinking to myself that I could not find anything positive about the situation at the time. Boy, was I wrong about that.
I am also still learning new lessons in business every single day. I work extra hard perfecting my systems, knowing that it will take time before I see the return. I’ve learned how to turn doubt into fuel to my fire. I also learned that I always need to be working on making new relationships and generating new business. I got comfortable and busy with my existing clientele and neglected marketing my own personal brand. Contracts expire, so don’t get yourself in a position where you need to start from square one again. Marketing should be a constant effort, which is something I try to tell the businesses I work with, too.
Please tell us about Backcourt Marketing.
Backcourt Marketing has been in business for almost two years. We began with full social media management services and have partnered with some really smart people in the last year to be able to include more to our clients, like SEO and advertising, website design, blogging and more. The reason for Backcourt Marketing’s name is that like the backcourt on a basketball team, we will assist you, defend your brand, and help you score. I have been blessed to work with some big names in sports early in my career and I carry that same level of service and excitement to every business I work with. Everyone who works with us can expect to receive personalized care, full communication, attention to detail and thoughtfulness. We listen to you to fully understand your brand’s message and fine-tune content to communicate that exactly so that you can trust us to handle your online presence.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in Northern California, an avid fan of the Sacramento Kings. My best childhood memories are of watching the games at home, as well as at the old Arco Arena that was such a fun and rowdy spot. That dream team from the early 2000’s with Mike Bibby, Chris Webber, Doug Christie and that whole squad was basically the summary of my childhood. I still get chills just thinking about those days and specific games I got to be at.
