Meet Joseph Robertson of Joseph Robertson Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Robertson.

Joseph has spent his life in the arts. First as a musician and composer, now as a Western and Wildlife artist. Self-taught, he works in scratchboard (a whiteboard covered in black ink). His images are scratched or etched into the board then hand colored with transparent washes of acrylic paint. Subjects are often captured by the artist’s camera first then used as reference material for later works of art.

After nearly 20 years on the road displaying his work at art shows throughout the west, Joseph is now the owner of a gallery on Whiskey Row in Prescott, AZ. There he displays his own work as well as 20 other local artists.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Always up for a challenge, Joseph has never let his lack of formal training stand in the way of pursuing his goals. “My biggest challenge is to continue learning and applying what I learn to my art and business.”

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Joseph Robertson Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
The Joseph Robertson Gallery is home to Joseph’s work as well as 20 other local artists.

There Joseph demonstrates his scratchboard technique to the many visitors to the Prescott area. Other artists include, Beth Neely (Watercolor illustration), Bill Cramer (Oil Paintings), Gablriel Ayala (Copper), Mel Mendez (Mendez Rugs), Judith Skinner (Polymer Clay) Shelley Bartolomeo (Dichroic Glass) and many others.

Located inside the St. Michael’s Alley on historic Whiskey Row, the gallery is open seven days a week.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think Samuel Goldwyn said it best, “The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

Joseph, your mother gifted us with one of your works several years ago (humming bird) and it hangs proudly on our wall!

Good luck with the new shop!
