Meet Dr. Vanessa Ruiz of Enliven Mental Health in Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Vanessa Ruiz.

Dr. Ruiz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started out as a busy nurse in NYC. During that time, I faced several health challenges, which were really an outcome of my high-stress job and burnout. After attempting to help myself through medications with little success and palliation, I stumbled upon a naturopathic doctor, Dr. Peter Bongiorno, who mentored me and showed me more natural ways towards improving my mental health and well-being. Meeting him changed the trajectory of my life, as it showed me what was possible for health and helping others. While it was a difficult time for me due to my poor health, it helped me to clarify my purpose and calling: to become a naturopathic doctor and help those with mental health issues and to give back to the many nurses who faced the same challenges I did.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest challenges for me were going through Naturopathic school and being an entrepreneur. I already had a career as a nurse, which meant I had to switch gears, move from NYC to Arizona and go back to Naturopathic Medical school! It has been absolutely worth it since it allows me to make the kind of impact on others I’ve always dreamt of. Being an entrepreneur is its own beast, and I never had a business background, so I’ve had to learn and wear many different hats along the process. I wouldn’t change it for the world since it gives me a platform for inspired creation, execution, and seeing my dreams come to fruition.

Please tell us about Enliven Mental Health.
Enliven Mental Health specializes in Mind-Body Medicine and Mental Health. What I’ve learned in practice and from my patients is that the mind and body aren’t separate reflections of one another rather. As a holistic doctor, I’m addressing not just the physical components but also the psychosocial and spiritual aspects to help bring them back into balance and wholeness. The goal is that my clients have a new experience of well-being. What I’m most proud of is the ability to help others who don’t respond to conventional treatment – where they likely will respond to a more dynamic and holistic approach. What sets us apart from others is the incredible diversity of knowledge that we can pull from Restorative Yoga, Somatic Therapies, Nutrition, Biofeedback, and more! Each client has a unique and personalized approach that helps to address their imbalances in a natural way.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
It was when I arrived from Manila, Philippines to NYC. I remember seeing the NYC skyline and being totally blown away by how big and lit up the city was. Everything was so new and foreign, very different from where I was born. I was met by my dad, whom I hadn’t seen in several years, who took us to get Rainbow Sherbet ice cream.
