Meet Deepika Haldankar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deepika Haldankar.

Deepika, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
“Two years back, I was asked – Who will give you a job now? I said – If there is no job for me, I will create one for myself.” Being an entrepreneur was my dream since childhood, but I had no idea how to go about it.

After moving to the US, the majority of the years I spent at home. Being on the H4 visa, I was compelled to sit at home. Initially, it was all good, but then boredom set in. I had done my MS in Social Sciences and felt my time was getting wasted. During these periods of boredom and frustration, I started doing photography.

Fast forward, after my daughter was born. I started a Food Blog ( in 2014, wherein I shared the recipes that I made for her when she began her first solid foods, along with other family-friendly recipes. It was a good exercise for me to keep myself busy being a stay at home mom.

Food Blogging introduced me to the world of Food Photography. It was a whole new area for me to explore, and I thoroughly started enjoying it. I loved capturing the food and its details. Developing new recipes and taking its pictures was something I did for the next few years.

In 2017, I was kind of in a rut. I wanted to do something more, so I started exploring and taking courses in Photography. I studied various elements of composition, lighting, etc. These added set of skills opened a new area to Professional Photography. I decided this was the time for a brand new career. At the beginning of 2019, I applied for all the permits necessary to work in the US.

Once I got the permits, there was no holding back. Later on, I went ahead and got the required licenses, and hence, Deepika Haldankar Photography was established. Along with my dream to be an entrepreneur and be helpful to the community.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Being at this point today has been a long rough road. As I mentioned earlier, being on the H4 visa was no joke. Going through the frustration of not able to move ahead in life and just watching my life pass by was ultimately taking a toll. I was told to accept life as it is and enjoy the comfort of what I have.

The very urge to get my life back into my hands was stronger than the comfort of sitting around and living for the sake of it. And then there was my daughter who looked up to me. I wanted her to have a model, whom she can look up to for strength whenever needed. Giving up was not an option. All these factors made me get out of my comfort zone.

Once I decided to work on myself, I faced another challenge of getting permits and licenses. Building everything step by step was a task in itself. I had no idea where to obtain licenses from or where to being. This is where I got out of my comfort zone and started approaching people for information. Slowly I got the required details, and then things started taking shape.

Tell us more about your business.
At Deepika Haldankar Photography, we focus on bringing visual stories to life. I, as an artist, am drawn towards visual storytelling and photography, which is one of the essential tools for me to portray that story.

I provide various services from Food Photography, Still Life Photography, and Product Photography. For me, Photography is a joy of creating a memory. The intricate details of every subject, it’s colors and textures make me explore more and capture them. With the use of bold colors and contrast, I bring out the true essence of flavor and feel of the food. A similar principle applies to my still life and product photography. I like to work with minimal props, so all the focus is on the subject that is being shot, which in turn helps it stand out.

For me, as a person and a business, I focus on the needs of the client. I like to tell the client’s vision through my photography. I am drawn to small businesses, who have a unique story to tell. I love to work with such clients. I genuinely believe that there is a story that needs to come out behind every brand. When you work with me, I go through your brand’s needs and determine what imagery you need and what kind of look you are going for. Once I have that clear, I do some research and come up with a mood broad. I share this with my client to know that we are visually on the same page. The next step is to determine the props and styling needed for the shoot. I will make sure what kind of light will work the best for the determined theme and do the test shots. Once those are approved, I will do the final shoot. After the shoot, it is editing and delivery time. I love the whole process of creating images- start to finish. So when I do the photoshoot, I fully invest my time and effort into it.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I think you will get what you ask for. The only trick is you should have the courage to ask and go for it. Through this journey, I have learned to be resilient and persistent. I did what I love, in spite of no apparent signs of anything coming out of it. I am fortunate enough to get in touch with people who taught me and helped me learn the art and skill of Photography. I will always be thankful to them.
