Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Roque.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As a child, I loved spending time with my notebooks drawing whenever I could. Now, I’m all grown, and I still love to spend my time the same way. I’ve upgraded the drawing surface to better paper, or to canvas or wood and often opt for paints over pencil, etc., and sometimes I use digital tools altogether. I worked to teach myself oil painting full time for over eight years, and now I have a day job working with my dad, and my art has become free to be whatever it wants, without the pressure of making a living from it.
Please tell us about your art.
I make paintings. I primarily using oil paint.
I made my first paintings digitally while procrastinating on school work. I soon began dabbling in traditional media and then decided to focus on oil painting because I love the challenge, and there is just something romantic about using the same media as the old masters.
I don’t have a particular message.
My subject matter usually revolves around figures or characters with expressive faces. I hope that by seeing the emotions on display, people would feel less lonely or at the very least it would be an exercise in empathy.
I also collaborate with my best friend Aldo Jeffrey, we call our work BrokeBot, and we make digital mixed media art.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
No, I don’t think the role of artists has changed. The role of an artist is to make art; however, they choose to express themselves for whatever reasons.

My artwork, as well as my collaborative artwork, can be viewed monthly at First Fridays, during the downtown Phoenix art walk inside our BrokeBot booth in the courtyard of MADE art boutique.
