Today we’d like to introduce you to Brianna Anderson.
Brianna, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I first started my photography business in 2011, I quickly came to realize that my PASSION was in Maternity & Newborn photography. I am a mom, a Neonatal ICU nurse, and a lover of all things feminine. So naturally, there is nothing more empowering and beautiful than pregnancy. But I did not want to be boxed into the conventional idea of maternity pictures, and to be honest, I struggled for a few years to truly find my artistic stride in my work.
As in anything, trends come and go, and I saw many trends over the years find their way into maternity photography. However, my vision remained the same. Let’s make a woman feel more than just beautiful. Let’s make her feel feminine, sexy, empowered, free, and maybe even mysterious. Let’s put her in a dress that she may have typically overlooked because it wasn’t “maternity”, and let’s have her hair blow in the wind and show off her pregnant body. Something magical happens when you give a pregnant woman permission to still be glamorous. Because becoming a mother is not some end to your womanhood and beauty- it is just the beginning!
Over the years, I have seen client after client embrace this idea. They arrive at their shoots in gowns, in dresses with lace and sexy cutouts, romantic dresses with flowers in their hair; anything that makes them feel beautiful. I started to see an emerging trend among women embracing the idea of being more edgy with their ideas. They were not limiting themselves simply because of their baby bumps, they were working with it. This gave way to some creative ideas that were blossoming. Why not do some editorial-inspired shoots with pregnant women, and show off the blend of all these trends in a very unexpected way.
Let’s put together a group of moms of all types, and show a glamorous side to maternity style, as well as the beauty of this “tribe” of motherhood among women. As I started experimenting with maternity session ideas, I was slowly carving a name for myself in the mama community. Now business is booming, and women come to me to help them feel beautiful in their sessions. It is the greatest and most fulfilling type of compliment. 🙂
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ll be honest, the roughest part of finding your identity as an artist is the temptation to compare your work to others. Here is what I have learned- while social media CAN be great, it can also be a big downfall for me. So I choose not to follow anyone or compare my work to others at all. And you know what? It made me a more confident, and better artist!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is totally and completely all about maternity photography. It is the only thing I photograph, it is my greatest passion, and continuously serves me with inspiration. I am constantly seeking ways to elevate my art and push it beyond what people have as expectations for maternity pictures. I want my girls to look and feel more editorial, more sexy and more empowered, than in your typical traditional maternity pictures.
I am known for creating a more moody, sexy, earthy vibe to my pictures, and bringing out an inner goddess in every woman I photograph. Even when they don’t believe me that they have it in them! 😉
What were you like growing up?
I am the older sister of just two girls in our family. My younger sister is six years younger than me, so I happily played the role of bossy big sister/mini mommy to her. 🙂 I believe I had pretty much the same traits as a little girl, that I do as an adult! Very overly organized (I literally clean my house every day), an obsessive planner, lover of all things tidy and neat. 😉
Very quick at making decisions, very emotional, and have always been super inspired by music and pretty landscapes. I used to make my little sister go out on photo shoots for me with my disposable cameras, or create “music videos” with our home video camera, and direct my sister in all sorts of creative performances. She would happily oblige, and I loved that time together. Who knew it was a foreshadowing! :))
