Meet Benjamin Cortez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Cortez.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am a multi-instrumental performer, composer, and recording artist from Mesa, Arizona. Both of my parents are professional musicians, so they had no problem with my interest in their instrument and CD collections from an early age. After they recognized my natural ability to recall and perform melodies I heard at church on Sundays, they arranged for me to take piano lessons at age 3. From then until today, I have jumped at every opportunity to play music professionally and better my craft, delivering soulful, high-energy performances on keyboards, guitar, bass guitar, and drums. I have been recruited to do live and session work by high-profile acts ranging from Oregon Catholic Press artist Tom Booth to punk rock band Authority Zero. In addition to leading my own band, The Benjamin Cortez Band, I play regularly with local Phoenix band Aunt B. Currently, I am focusing on completing a degree in Jazz Piano at Arizona State University.

Please tell us about your art.
As an aficionado of all vintage music, I absolutely love to perform and write songs that either transports people back to their glory days or gives them a glimpse of a classic era of rich musical culture. I enjoy covering songs by Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Paul Simon, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc., in addition to writing my own songs that I feel would fit in well with the classic vinyl sitting in a cardboard box in our parents’ basements. My mission in making this music is to put a smile on my listeners’ faces and remind them of a cultural time period that I find very special in our history.

I am currently working to release an eight-song album in which I wrote, performed keyboards, guitars, bass, drums and vocals, recorded, and mixed all the songs myself! It took me a few years to get this project off the ground but pushing myself to learn about making and releasing an album has been an extremely valuable experience. I am thankful to all my family and friends who have patiently helped me to get through every facet of this project! It will be coming out soon in the fall of 2018.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
The best advice I can give is to never let a lack of the “best” and “latest” materials get in the way of you making your masterpiece. It is amazing what one can do with a creative mind and the tools we have laying around one’s home! Don’t be too proud to ask tons of questions about how to do something yourself, or to ask for financial help with your project! A lot of people are super nice and would love to help to make your dreams come to fruition.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
You can find updates on my projects, upcoming shows, and more on!
