Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley LaRae Sampson.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Ashley. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I have a pretty fun story. I began my career as a wardrobe stylist for megastars like Jay-Z and Kanye West, and I would travel with them on their tours.
After branching out to athletes, photo shoots, film, and magazines, I decided to stop touring and start working with more creatives and businesspersons in Phoenix. After a few curves (and a couple of full-time jobs that added some major skills and connections under my belt), I combined my image & style background with my marketing skills to transition into creative branding.
And I soon began working with community and business leaders for CEO and Leadership branding, marketing, and social media content. As a stylist, I had no idea I could use my business sense to create a career so fulfilling and fun, but I always made sure to observe the powerful people I worked with and around, and I truly believe being in such close quarters with them and learning from their multi-millionaire minds has been so helpful for my own vision and belief in what was possible for me.
I mean, can you spend hundreds of hours closed in tight quarters like dressing rooms and closets with wildly successful people like Jay-Z and not let a little of his business-mind rub off? Now, I take what I’ve learned and helped others apply the vision to their own lives, refine their authenticity, and help them see and take the steps between where they are now and where they want to be,
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
That graph of the straight line flipping and turning and swirling and dropping before it steadies on its upward path… Yeah, that’s been my road to success. At one point, I almost gave up on my company.
The pressure and expectations were strong, and I didn’t feel like I was authentic to what I wanted to do with my life anymore. I took time off from consulting, began a career as an investment banker (wild, right?), and got my professional mind balanced again before launching back into consulting with a new, revitalized, empowered and more mature understanding of what life I wanted to create for myself and what I wanted to spend my time working on.
While there’s been a ton more struggles, I think it’s important to share that business entrepreneurship is difficult, can be lonely, can be scary and feel like a lot of failures, but we don’t truly fail until we fully give up. I’m so grateful I took a break to refocus and build more skills instead of drowning in my confusion and slipping entirely off the professional rails.
There were times over the years that I didn’t have a dollar to my name, and learning how to stay balanced, determined, faithful and understand the power of my abilities to create the necessary changes from within has been key.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the StylePHX story. Tell us more about the business.
As a CEO and leadership branding consultant, I help professionals of all industries recognize where they are, envision where they want to be and feel self-empowered enough to fill in the gaps in between. With marketing and social media content, I help organizations and individuals convey powerful messages to their target market.
As a public speaker, I inspire others to step into their most ideal self, lives, and careers and teach them tricks and tools to make it happen long-term. I usually speak at conferences, summits, seminars, and workshops, and this is split between meditation or visualization sessions (yes, at conferences, it’s a hit, who knew?), and branding or leadership topics. Whenever possible, I combine the topics with the meditation or visualization, and people tend to respond best to that integration. It’s an undoubtedly powerful thing.
My passion for mindfulness attracts more and more clients and opportunities that help me feel aligned with a higher path, and I incorporate mindfulness tactics into each client or organization I work with or speak to, even if they don’t always realize it. The power of intention is so strong, I believe stripping away the layers that hold us back from our best selves and greatest success is one of the most helpful things I can do for others.
I also work closely with the community in areas I deeply care about. I’m the Chair of the Greater Phoenix Chamber’s Valley Young Professionals, the Marketing Co-Chair for Girls In Tech Phoenix, the Vice Chair of Phoenix Police Chief’s Business Council, a youth mentor for a 13-year-old girl through New Pathways for Youth, and I spent a couple of years as the Communication Director for AIGA AZ, which I still host a quarterly event with them called Coffee with Creatives.
I’m most proud of my genuine love for helping others succeed and feel the freedom of authentically of living their lives in alignment with their career dreams. If I can do it, so can others. Sometimes we just need someone who knows what they’re talking about to see our potential and help us reach it. That’s what makes me thrive.
Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was often called hard-headed and “too smart for my own good.” I’d like to transition that term to determined, unwavering, and strong-willed. My passions sometimes got the best of me, too, but how much fun would it be without sparks and flames along the way? Finally, in my mid-thirties, I’ve learned how to harness that powerful passion and wild determination into a funnel of satisfying projects, clients, and experiences.
