Today we’d like to introduce you to Anne Marie “Annie” Glenn.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Creating and growing a custom jewelry business was a dream God put in my heart. In the summer of 2016, I put the dream into action. One of the first things I remember is reaching out to another jewelry maker asking her what size cord she uses on her pieces. Next thing you know, I landed several of my malas as retail merchandise in my favorite yoga studio. One of the gals that worked there helped design my logo. From there, I ordered business cards, filed for a TPT license, an LLC name, purchased hosting/ domain names for my website, hired professionals to create my website and bought material for my jewelry at an awesome local store. I’ve had to revise my website a few times in the last several years to keep it current. And I stay busy engaging with various social media platforms. It’s my hope to secure ADP as my payroll service within the year. When I’m not handling the business side of the business, I meet with my clients – to help them create a beautiful custom bracelet or mala(s).
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road? Of course not.
With regards to having my jewelry business grow, early on, I had one of my supports turn on me. That hurt and business slowed because of it. I often struggle to get clients to pay for their orders. I front the money to purchase the stones. And a lot of time the stones I use aren’t cheap. So that has presented a challenge. Also, there are steps to continue to grow the business I’d like to take but can’t afford yet. This includes paying a vendor for tax filing and payroll services.
Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Struggles are normal.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Annie G Malas – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I design, and I make malas. And a lot of times, in conversation, I’m asked, “what is a mala?” A mala is a tool used to help enhance meditation.
Malas are also known as prayer beads. Using beads for prayer as a meditation tool dates back beyond written history. You can see them used as a tool in almost every spiritual and religious practice.
It’s not a silly question to ask how to use one. To use a mala, you hold it in either hand. Starting just after the Guru (typically the largest) bead, you recite a mantra while holding each bead between the thumb and one of the fingers, moving from one bead to the next with each recitation. You basically drape the mala over the finger and use the thumb to pull the beads over the finger toward you after each recitation of the mantra. This makes the bead pass over the intended meridian point. After you have completed a full circle of your mala, you will feel the Guru bead. You can make a special prayer with the Guru bead and then begin again, either switching the hands, turning the mala or just continuing along.
I came to learn that using a mala is a form of acupressure. There are acupressure points on each of the fingers that work on different parts of the psyche and the brain. When the beads press the meridian points in the finger, you can work on a specific result. The meridian point you are trying to activate is located on the side of each finger, in the center point between the tip of the finger and the upper knuckle. Properties of the meridian points for each finger are as follows:
– Index Finger (Jupiter Finger): Wisdom. Knowledge. Prosperity
– Middle Finger (Saturn Finger): Patience.
– Ring Finger (Sun Finger): Health. Vitality. Strengthen the Nervous System.
– Little Finger (Mercury Finger): Communication. Intelligence.
When reciting a mantra with a mala meditation, you recite the entire mantra on each bead (not one bead per word). You can also use affirmations with your mala, repeating the affirmation with each bead. The recitations can be done silently, as a whisper, in song or spoken out loud.
It’s perfectly normal not to know what a mantra is. For those interested, it’s a mind projection created in either a spoken or mental manner. They can be a word, phrase, syllable, or sound. They can be recited, sung, or repeated silently in the mind. There are many mantras each one having its own quality, rhythm, and effect. Every thought or feeling that we have is on a vibratory frequency. By using mantras, we direct the mind into a high vibratory frequency. Cool, right?
Do malas beads have healing qualities? Yes! Malas are made from a variety of types of beads. Integrating gemstone therapy into your meditation helps to enhance its results. There are many online resources with information about the healing properties of different types of gemstones. When choosing a mala, it is important to choose stones that focus on the results you are looking for in your meditation.
In addition to malas, I specialize in creating single strand bracelets, leather wrap bracelets, and macrame bracelets.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I have a full-time job in Property Management. In general, I’m very proud to be in this line of work. It affords me the opportunity to help improve the community, to learn, and to grow.
With regards to my jewelry business, getting featured here in VoyagePhoenix as an inspiring story is pretty cool, I have to say. I’m going to share this with my Mom for sure. My mom even got involved with my business a few years ago – designing custom bags for my jewelry. I told her we have to get her business cards one of these days. I call her business, “Judi G Bags.”
