Life and Work with Kara Beckmann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Beckmann.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
For as long as I can remember, I have loved using my creative side in all aspects of my life. I decided to go to Culinary School after graduating from high school as I eventually wanted to open my own wedding cake shop or bakery. I graduated with my degree in Patisserie and Baking from Le Cordon Bleu and worked as a Pastry Chef for years after graduating. As much as I loved creating desserts, cakes, and specialty baked goods my passion was slipping away from culinary. During these years, I had been saving money to eventually open my own bakery. I had decided to take the money that I had saved and invest it in my first investment property. Little did I know, at the time that this would turn into a huge passion of mine and one year later, Beckmann House became my full-time career.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My first investment went incredibly easy and I joke about that because had the first house not gone smoothly, I might not be doing this today. Every house after that was increasingly harder and came with new sets of challenges and setbacks. I had to learn how to deal with high levels of stress, working with contractors when you do not see eye-to-eye, how to manage my time, budgets, accounting and learn that it’s okay when things don’t go as planned.

Everyone’s journey is different and some starts will be easier than others. What kept me going was my mindset. When you start to look at negative situations as a learning experience, they become much easier to handle. My advice to young women who are just starting their journey is how important it is to not compare yourself to what others have been doing for years. Everyone starts somewhere, and you will get there, but enjoy the journey and small victories along the way!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Beckmann House – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Beckmann House is a Real Estate Investment company in Scottsdale, AZ. We are known for our unique residential renovations and client remodels.

I am most proud of how many projects we have completed in such a short amount of time, with only one employee! I recently hired my second employee and took on my 17th bathroom remodel this year… and it is only February!

What sets me apart from others, is how involved I am in my personal renovations. It is not uncommon for me to show up one day to demo with the crew, install hardware, acid wash a pool deck to then re-paint it myself, paint baseboards, etc… I enjoy being involved and taking on new tasks on my own remodels because it further educates me and makes me more aware of things that can come up during a client remodel.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Construction is definitely still very male-dominated, although it is great to see so many women on social media who are making a name for themselves in this industry. I still see commercials and adds that are advertising to men, when it is actually a product that I need.

It is wonderful that large companies are starting to highlight more women who are making a living in this field which fuels popularity and creates more jobs and opportunity!
