Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Trujillo.
Hi Michelle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am from Tucson, Arizona. Born and raised. I just moved around the Tempe/Scottsdale area to start a new job while also focusing on my music. The earliest I can remember thinking about making my own music was when I was a freshman in high-school back in 2012. I used to listen to a lot of EDM and I wanted to be like Krewella or Nicky Romero. But I didn’t really start messing around with music until November of 2020.
I was in my friend’s room and he made a quick little beat for me so I started writing lyrics just for fun, I never thought I’d get further than just being an unfinished file on his computer. I kept writing and it was a slow process but I finally finished it a couple of months later. I didn’t release that song (3 A.M.) until February of this year because I spent a lot of 2021 learning how to mix and master it.
I bought my own equipment last February to learn how to produce my own beats. I am still a super novice but I look back at my first beats and I laugh because I thought they sounded good. I mean, you gotta start somewhere right? I’m happy to see how far I’ve come and this really is just the beginning of my musical journey! I’ll be releasing more songs slowly.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fun road. I love creating and I love the process of seeing something come together. But it does take a while for me to finish a song just because I still have a lot to learn and I keep learning things that will make my songs sound of better quality.
Something that was and is still kind of hard for me is promoting myself. I like to think of myself as an introverted extrovert. So as outgoing as I am I do get shy about my work. Like with my first song I put it out and I only told my family and closest friends. If people came across it on their own that’s great!
In my second song, I promoted it a little more and I felt more confident in myself as an artist and I was very proud of my work. With my next songs, I definitely want to promote them more on my social media. I always have friends telling me not to be shy and promote my music but it’s something I’m still working on.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. I make music that I like to listen to so that’s mostly reggaeton/Latin pop type music. My specialty I would say is writing feel-good songs. I like to write songs that make people want to move and that are catchy.
I think it’s also important to show through my music who I am and I show that by writing songs in both English and Spanish. I switch between the two languages when I write because I want to incorporate both of my backgrounds. I am from Arizona but I want to incorporate my Mexican roots.
I would say right now my style is chill but upbeat. I want to make more music that has sort of that dope old-school reggaeton feel that gets people really moving. Combine that with my soft voice I think it could be something unique.
I’m looking to perform soon, and I have some friends who DJ at some bars playing my song! I’m trying to get my name and music out there in baby steps.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I have surrounded myself with other artists and we help each other in any way we can.
I may know a little bit about something that they could learn from and vice versa. Work with other people to find what you like if you’re just starting out.
I realized that I like R&B working with some friends so I would like to do some r&b songs when I finish up my current projects.
