Today we’d like to introduce you to Houtaneh Houtan.
Hi Houtaneh, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I knew I wanted to be a doctor since I was in my teenage years – I wanted to help people, and I was fascinated by science and the human body, so being a physician seemed like a natural derivation. It wasn’t until I was in my early years of college when I started having significant health problems of my own, that I realized how lacking the allopathic medical community was in truly finding the root cause of a disease and treating it.
I had a very hard time finding a physician who not only listened to me for longer than 2 minutes but also understood what I was going through and had a real solution (other than drugs, which were not a great option anyway). So, I set out to be my own best physician! The rest is history, really. I found naturopathic medicine (which is EXACTLY what I had been looking for all these years!), attended the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ, and I’m proud to say that I did in fact, become the physician that I needed all those years ago.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road! The entire road was bumpy, full of potholes, and sometimes my car broke down, but I made it through with the support of my family and friends (especially all the new friends I made while in medical school). I won’t bore you with all the minutiae, but naturopathic medical school was the roughest part of this whole process. The program really does eat you up and spit you out – there were so many days that I wanted to quit, and I came close a couple of times, but somehow my appetite for helping people outweighed the stress of school and I pulled through. It was so worth it, though; I love my job so much, and I can’t imagine doing anything else that makes me happier.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run my own solo practice, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the freedom of being a business owner, and I’m so blessed to have such amazing patients who are dedicated to improving their health. I primarily see patients who have endocrine, gastrointestinal, and metabolic concerns. A great deal of my practice revolves around chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, menstrual irregularities, kidney disease, etc. My favorite modalities are ancestral nutrition, homeopathy, stress management, and botanical medicine.
What sets me apart from other naturopathic physicians is that I don’t subscribe to the plant-based diet, as I have found in my patient population that this actually makes patients feel worse, deprives them of nutrients, and overall can lead to furthering of chronic disease. I am extremely passionate about an omnivore-style diet since this is the fundamental basis of our physiology, and I so enjoy educating patients on this topic.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can find me on Instagram and Facebook @holisticdoctorhout, or on my website at www.holisticdoctorhout.com. The best way to support my practice is to become a patient! I love meeting new people and helping them along their health journey. 🙂
