Today we’d like to introduce you to Adeib El Masri.
Adeib, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up, my grandpa would always have polaroids and random film cameras laying around so I would steal them and take photos of my friends and family. I remember taking a disposable camera to a field trip when I went to middle school in Jordan and once my mom got the film developed, I got yelled at for only taking pictures of landscapes and other people. When I started high school in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia I became the school’s photographer and used to cover every event and I genuinely loved it! (plus I got to get out of class haha)
Fast forward to college where I got busy with moving to Arizona and starting the semester, I completely forgot about my camera and just kept it in a drawer in my dorm room. Around Thanksgiving of my freshman year, my friends at the time confronted me about how my religion and culture made them uncomfortable. Since it was the end of the semester, it was too late to make new friends so I pulled out the camera and started taking photos again. A few months into taking photos I started an Instagram account called Civitatestres (Latin for 3 Origins) and I haven’t looked back ever since.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
The one thing I care about showing through my work is representation. I want every person that stumbles upon my account to feel represented and feel welcomed. I also try to show my culture and how different people from the same culture can be.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
The definition of success changes all the time for me. I think as long as I’m happy with my work and as long as I’m experimenting with new mediums and trying new things then I’m happy, and for right now, happiness is success.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Mainly Instagram that’s where you can find me regularly but I’m releasing a few prints soon on my website!
