Today we’d like to introduce you to Granville Carroll.
Granville, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
The story all begins with my birth in Riverside, California. At the young age of five years old my family and I moved to the greater Seattle area. We lived in Western Washington for about 14 years. During this time, we moved quite a bit. This experience brought about ideas of change and embracing the unknown. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest also brought about a connection to the land and the natural elements. During my Jr high and high school days I began to dive into art as just a fun way to explore the world. After I graduated high school my mother moved to Arizona, but yet I stayed behind in Washington to make it on my own. I began to develop a deeper connection to the mind and pursued the path of psychology. Due to unforeseen and unfortunate events I had to leave my home in Washington. I made the difficult choice to pack all my things and venture into a new land, yet again having to embrace the unknown. Arizona was the obvious place to go to since my family had moved there. After adjusting to the many differences, I went back to school to pursue my degree in psychology and in the interim I picked up art again, specifically photography. As I continued my schooling I started to see how my whole world was being consumed by this art medium. I began to question the path I was on and which way I wanted to lead my life. I continued to embrace the unknown and walked directly into the path of becoming an artist. I had no idea where this road would take me, or what may transpire from the adventure, but I was ready for change. Currently I am preparing to graduate with my Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography from Arizona State University. And I await as the next chapter is preparing to be written.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a fine art photographer who works in the digital spectrum of the medium. I use digital techniques to combine multiple images in order to give power to my ideas. I feel that working in this manner allows me to create in a limitless environment. I also experiment with different processes to see how process can change meaning and our perceptions of the work itself. I have experimented with different alternative photographic processes and printmaking techniques.
I currently focus on the human psyche, perception, and reality. My interest in the immateriality of the world prompts me to create works of art that defy the physical realm and show how our minds are limitless. My work interprets the observations of the internal and external environments. While examining spirituality through a conscious state of symbols and identity, I explore ideas surrounding metaphysics and existentialism.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I do believe that the role of an artist changes given the circumstances of our external reality. When I look at the world I see how there is such a focus on the negative, dark, and depressive events that occur. I believe that creating awareness and being enlightened is important. However, I do not see enough the opposite being spoken about. My work in a way challenges the ideas of submitting to the news and what is being taught on a societal level. I seek to expand the mind to think deeply about the self in reality, in relationship to the internal and external environments we create and are brought into. I wish to create an awareness of how our minds are powerful to recreate reality and become awakened to new perceptions. My work is not directly political by any means. What I seek to do is spread light within a world so broken by illusions of separation.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I currently have work up at Art Intersection in Gilbert, AZ for their Light Sensitive show (March 6th-April 21st, 2018| Opening reception is March 10th, 5-7pm).
I will have work up through the end of March at Proxy 333 in Downtown Phoenix.
I also have work up at Unitarian Congregation for the Diverse Artist Collective of AZ until March 17th, 2018.
Next month in April I will be holding an art exhibit at Skyline Loft’s Art Gallery for First Friday, April 6th from 6-9pm
