Story & Lesson Highlights with william babin of mesa

We’re looking forward to introducing you to william babin. Check out our conversation below.

Hi william, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My wife, children, and grandchildren bring me the greatest joy. But if we are looking for hobbies, then it is waterskiing. I am an old school guy. I own a flat-bottom, direct drive Nautique ski boat specially designed for slalom skiiing. Brings me the greatest joy to be on the water, staring at the beautiful AZ landscape of rock, cactus, reeds, mountains, and blue skies, while hearing the wind whistle in my ears.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My brand is Bill Babin! I am a drummer, producer, agent, speaker, black belt, and event producer. That’s a lot and so it is OK to call me a renaissance man because I also hold a MA in english. My main work at this time is my music business. We are celebrating 20 years of rocking AZ and earning a 5-STAR rating on both Google and THE BASH. We are bringing to the stage new music, a new look, new players, and a new energy! We offer solo, duo, trio acoustic and electric formats that cover rock pop disco motown country, classic rock, and more. And this fall we will introduce the BIG ZEPHYR jazz vocal duo, featuring the Great American Songbook.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
1987 when I first visit a Unity School of Christianity church service. age 35. I had been raised Catholic and none of that education “stuck.” In those first services, I learned I was divine; I learned that there is order in the world; I learned that love is all there is. Those moments shaped my life.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
in 1987, after being in business for just 3 years, cash flow was tight and I felt that there was no money to even pay the basic bills. My head fell to the desk and I cried in desperation. I had such little faith. At the time, I was running a karate school. My billing company collected payments from my clients and once a month, sent me a large check. The very next day that large check came in the mail and I paid my bills. I learned in those desperate moments to rise above my circumstances to gain a different viewpoint.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Jimmy Carter. enough said. The prototype for being human. And man of works AND faith.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
He sure did a lot of stuff…. black belt master of taekwondo, musician / drummer / producer, Athlete / water skier. Husband, father, grandfather. He loved doing everything he did.
