Story & Lesson Highlights with Skai Harbor of Phoenix

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Skai Harbor. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Skai, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity, for sure. You can fake the energy, you can fake intelligence, but I don’t think you can fake integrity. You either got it or you don’t.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I go by the name ‘Skai Harbor’ as ode to my hometown, Phoenix, AZ. Im an independent artist, writer, DJ, & audio engineer. I’m also a member of a mentoring organization called Our Black Fathers Committee (OBFC). Right now, I’m working on a solo project titled, ‘Takin Flight 2’ the sequel to my first project I dropped back in 2013. I’m working with my favorite producers on it currently, Rich Grand, 210West & a few more.
I’m also working on a joint album with my brother, itzPreme aka Kutlass Supreme, called “Brothers of Disruption”. I’m excited for both of these albums to drop in the near future.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The first time I performed on stage. I had wrote a verse for an event at my school and had the whole auditorium silent before I started. I had no clue what crowd control was or what stage presence meant at the time. The crowd clapped a beat for me and I remember my classmates, the teachers, and faculty members started to recognize me a little different after that. That moment made me realize that I had a power of my own.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Plenty times. Writing was always a funnel for my internal battles that I faced. I put a lot of my silent battles in my music. The things that I rarely get to speak on or when I need to get something off my mind, I would write it. Dealing with grief, death, and separation on top of the every day things we all face as a society. The industry constantly changing also made me feel like this just wasn’t for me anymore, but I’m motivated more than ever now. When people or fans are looking for your word and inspiration, that should be the sign that you have a calling.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
The fads are the customs, the nuances, the slang, the clothes, the sound of the times. The shift, culturally, is made by someone/something that’s creating a new dynamic. Those are our trailblazers, our trendsetters, even our ancestors who paved the way before us. With Artificial Intelligence growing more prevalent, it seems like original thought and innovation is being replaced with algorithms and convenience. We see this happening in film and music industry today more than ever. In certain cases, that may be beneficial. I think we need more creators with more original ideas and authenticity.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m not sure if this is what I was born to do. I know I enjoy making music and it’s where my passion lays right now. I just know I’m serving a purpose. When it’s my time, I’ll know I had left behind a legacy with an undeniable purpose.
