Story & Lesson Highlights with Monique Millan

Monique Millan shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Monique, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
One of the biggest misconceptions is that we’re just another influencer page sharing scenic photos of Arizona. AAG has always been about connection—to nature, to community, and to purpose. We’re intentional with what we share, keeping some places sacred and focusing on meaningful engagement over mass exposure. Behind the scenes promoting leave-no-trace principles. We’re not here to chase likes—we’re here to build a respectful, informed, and lasting outdoor culture.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Monique, and alongside my husband Edgar, we created Arizona Adventure Group (AAG) to connect people with the beauty of our home state. What began as a personal outlet to document our family’s adventures has become a space where outdoor lovers across Arizona come together. We highlight the wonder of nature while encouraging people to explore with care and respect. AAG stands out not for how much we share, but how we share—with intention, authenticity, and a deep love for protecting the places that make Arizona so special.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
It took us a few years to fully understand the deeper meaning of what we do. At first, it was about sharing cool places and connecting with others who love the outdoors. But over time, we realized the responsibility that comes with that reach. One moment that shifted everything was seeing a once-secluded trail overwhelmed with trash and traffic after it went viral. It hit us hard—we weren’t just sharing locations, we were shaping behavior. That’s when we shifted our focus from exposure to education, from showcasing to stewardship. Now, everything we post has purpose.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The suffering was seeing a shift in social media—places in Arizona that were once peaceful and sacred became overwhelmed with tourists and trash. While we love to share, we are deeply protective of the land. That experience taught us what success never could: that impact matters more than reach. Popularity means nothing if it contributes to the destruction of what we love. Suffering taught us to slow down, to be intentional, and to use our voice not just to inspire, but to educate and protect. It grounded us in purpose and reminded us why we started in the first place.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in the outdoor and social media space is that more exposure is always better. The idea that every hidden gem should be shared, geo-tagged, and posted for the world to see is harmful. It encourages over-tourism, damages fragile environments, and strips places of their peace. Another lie is that adventure has to look a certain way, perfect bodies, big brands, or extreme challenges. Real adventure is personal. It’s about connection, growth, and respect—for yourself, others, and the land. That truth gets lost in curated feeds and viral trends.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I know I’m out of my depth when I stop feeling grounded in purpose and start reacting instead of leading. It’s that moment when decisions are driven by pressure, whether from social media trends, audience expectations, or trying to “keep up.” That’s my signal to pause. I’ve learned that just because something is popular doesn’t mean it aligns with our values. When things start moving too fast or feel disconnected from our why, it’s time to step back, re-center, and recalibrate. Growth is great, but not at the cost of integrity.
