We recently had the chance to connect with Justin Verner and have shared our conversation below.

Justin, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Wandering. My style is different in this day and age – but good music is good music, and a good book is a good book.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am an author and songwriter. My art is very much a representation of my experiences and ongoing testimony. Write about what you know, right?

For example, my book, Jason and Catalina, tells the story of a lonely author who, despite past successes, finds himself in a terrible rut. Years have gone by without any new output. He is lacking faith, hope, and love. Things begin to take a turn for the better when he meets his new next-door neighbor, Catalina.

And my latest single, “Jacaranda”, is about love (or lust) at first sight.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed you had to surrender to bullies.

But I’ve seen too many bullies crumble to believe that anymore.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering helps you understand yourself. It shows you what doesn’t work, and what does.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I wear my emotions on my sleeve, for better or for worse.

Creating a new song. Very therapeutic!
