Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Smith.
Taylor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my apprenticeship in 2020 at Tattoo Avenue under Gee Ellis. Sarah Wakefield introduced us and helped me get into the industry. Since starting I’ve been learning constantly from other artists in the shop (Gee, Sarah, Josh Muzzy, Wes Owens, Erika Jo Smith).
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Other than the obvious technical/artistic skill learning, trusting myself is something I would struggle with and sometimes kinda do still. The artists at my shop and our piercer, Cailin Castro are very supportive and have been helping a lot with that!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Right now as an apprentice, I’m trying to learn as much as I can, I wouldn’t say I have a “specialty” yet. I’ve been trying to work more with color lately though. It’s awesome when you can give someone a tattoo they love and a comfortable pleasant experience, having someone leave happy is always a proud moment.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The stigma against tattooing is definitely fading. Artists are constantly innovating new styles and techniques. Creativity is everywhere. It’s only growth for the tattoo industry from here!
