Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Miranda.
Hi Skye, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
One of my first memories was brushing my cousin’s hair telling her, “we’re going to brush it so well it will never tangle again!” Growing up with a frugal mother, she took us to beauty schools for haircuts & I remember thinking I wanted to be just like them. I consider myself lucky I knew my calling from a young age. My great-grandmother lived to be 94 years old and I was blessed to spend the last few years of her life around her because she was a beautician herself. I was 15 when she passed and my grandmother (her daughter) gave me her cosmetology textbook. I dove deep into reading Milanis 1950-1970 textbook & began doing friends’ hair through high school and eventually was fortunate enough to be accepted into West Mecs Cosmetology program. While I was attending school I began working as an assistant in a cute little salon in a retirement community that eventually hired me as a stylist once I acquired my cosmetology license.
After a few salons and many other side jobs along the way, in 2019 I became independent and started renting from friends in salon suites and eventually opened my own in 2021. Now I service women, particularly those seeking color and extension services, and help them feel confident and beautiful with their hair.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Cosmetology definitely isn’t something you make money in right away. You have to improve your technical skills, establish yourself in your community and build trust with a client base.
Being the young stylist, at first, you have to fake it ‘til you make it because there’s nothing like getting the real-life experience of working on an actual human head of hair. I was fortunate enough to have two dear friends who were experienced stylists take me under their wing & mentor me those first few years after schooling. They say it takes 5 years to build a business and I think a lot of stylists give up within that time frame due to financial reasons and lack of support. I worked a lot of jobs that weren’t hair related along the way to support myself while I was building my business. Sometimes working 3+ jobs at a time and multiple weeks without a day off between warehouse jobs, assisting jobs, and my actual career behind the chair.
I eventually got to a point where I realized I wasn’t giving hair my all & it was showing so I gave up all the other jobs with financial stability and put my focus 100% into my business. I realized I could have done it much sooner but my journey was my journey and I learned a lot about myself along the way.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in color and hair extensions. Something I’m most passionate about is hair extensions in particular because I love being able to give women the long, thick hair they’ve always wanted but may be unable to achieve with their natural hair. Recently I had someone cry tears of happiness when I showed her her hair color. She said to me “This is exactly what I’ve been wanting for a long time.
My hair has always been my biggest insecurity and you helped me finally love it”. Being able to make that kind of an impact on people is exactly why I do what I do. A lot of people think “it’s just hair” but to me and to a lot of my guests it is so much more. When we look good we feel good and being able to help women feel confident in something they haven’t always felt the most secure about is what sparks my passion for the industry.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I don’t think there’s much about me that most of my community doesn’t already know. I try to be my most authentic self online and in person. I never pretend to be someone I’m not or act like I don’t have my own struggles. I find it helps my community relate to me in other ways than just me being a local hairstylist. I share a lot about my struggles along the way, my journey into health and fitness, what it’s like being a business owner, and my love for being a dog mom.
It’s actually given me a sense of importance to continue to share the real-life moments and struggles I endure because it gives something my community can relate to. It shows that I’m human just like everyone else. I often have guests come in and tell me about the most recent endeavors in their own personal fitness journeys or how their business is doing and it’s exciting to be able to share those things in common and be able to “compare notes”.
Especially when we’re working together for an hour – 5 hours!
