Rising Stars: Meet Shelby Scott

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Scott.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was raised with dogs and puppies. My mom bred Crocker Spaniels. I loved playing with all my dogs, and of course, I always wanted to keep all the precious puppies. I purchased my home in 2000. The property sits almost an acre, and I wanted to do something with dogs, but my husband at the time was completely against it. In 2015, we divorced, and I kept the house.

I started researching breeding and was mentored by Andy from US Doodles in Phoenix. I soaked up all the knowledge I could. I started taking classes with Badass Breeder to learn how to give puppies the best possible start in life. In 2017, I took my divorce settlement and started Brightness Beauties LLC. It has been the best decision I’ve ever made.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve definitely had some challenges. Creating the perfect “home” for growing puppies was my biggest challenge. They needed enough room to play, sleep, eat, and potty. Keeping the clean and dry became my number one goal. Training pads were a mess, and so was a newspaper. My partner said, “What about straw?” It was genius!

Now, all of my puppy playpens have a play area with lots of toys, crates, and blankets for sleeping, and trays filled with straw for their bathroom area. I have learned so much through trial and error, and I feel like I am at a place now where I can relish in all the joy the puppies bring me instead of stress and worry about keeping them out of their “bathroom.”

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I raised happy, healthy Golden Retrievers.

My days are filled with helping puppies learn the world is safe and loving and that manners are important. Golden Retrievers have the most loving and gentle souls, and I am proud to try to mimic those traits. They are truly perfect.

Can you talk to us about happiness and what makes you happy?
Life. My life. I wake up every morning thrilled I have another day to live, love, and smell puppy breath.
