Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Hill.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Absolutely! So I am the mother to the girls with the beautiful hair!

To give a bit of a back story, I have been active in the curly world for the last three years, creating content on our IG page @NaturallyCurlyKids. This page was created to help other parents with their kids’ curls. The initial goal when we started was to help just one curly kid walk into school more confident in their God-given curls.

Taking care of my kids’ curls has always been very important to me, being mixed African American and Caucasian, they have a completely different hair texture than my own. I was determined not to be the white mom whose mixed children’s hair looked a mess. So, from the day they were born, I learned it, tried everything, and practiced… I was not ignorant to the fact their hair wasn’t like mine and needed a different kind of love other than my own…

However, that said – I have NOT loved my hair, not even close. My whole life, I have straighten my hair like it was my job. I used a real iron and laid my head on the ironing board. I damaged my hair to no end and didn’t care. My kids would ask me to straighten their hair, and I would — maybe twice a year… even though they asked more than that! I would think to myself, “Your hair is so beautiful, you have your whole life ahead of you to damage it…” This got me thinking… why do I tell them to love themselves how God made them, yet I continued to try to alter myself?

August 2019, I decided I was going to stop, no matter what. No more heat. Three months into this decision, I got a curly cut, so there was really NO turning back – straightening those layers would have looked CRAZY!!

When I started this natural journey, I tried a technique called “plopping” and my hair LOVED it. Plopping is a heat-free hair drying technique for curly/wavy-haired people. It is a technique that you can use after you’ve applied your stylers and before you start to dry your hair. It will accordion your curls, helping them keep their defined, spiral shape, even after they dry. With plopping, I loved the way my waves looked, I was not in love with the tools, or should I say the lack of tools available to do the job. Every influencer I found teaching the technique of plopping used “an old tee shirt.” Wrapping my hair up in an “old tee-shirt” frankly was not comfortable, and was very cumbersome. I found myself trying to balance a tee-shirt on my head as time went on, which hurt my neck and was annoying.

With a background in marketing and design, I was on a mission to create my own tool for the job. At this point, I was creating something to make my life easier, and the lives of my children… but after many sketches, patterns and trials, I realized there was a need for this product in the curly world, and I couldn’t keep it to myself. I made a better mousetrap, and needed to share it with all the curlfriends!

That is when MoonstoneSeven was born. I created “The Hair Plop” which significantly cuts down your drying time with a soft, stretchy, comfortable, and versatile wrap! Leaving curls frizz-free, defined, and won’t scratch the surface of the strands. The Hair Plop enhances natural definition and produces the luscious, bouncy waves and curls!

I took the verb “plop” and make it a noun. Changing the way the curl world dries their curls.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Figuring out inventory and making sure we have enough, but not too much has been my biggest obstacle. With all the importation issues and material shortages I want to make sure we have what we need to sell, but being a small business, watching our bottom dollar as well.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In a nutshell we make the curl world feel more confident by providing a tool to help embrace ones natural texture. I think what has sets us apart from other brands is our relationship building. Before we started MoonstoneSeven we helped thousands of curlies with free advice on our @NaturallyCurlyKids page. Simply advice from a mom, who figured out what worked and how to share those tips and tricks with others. We are known for being real, and I LOVE THAT!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck; I believe in hard work and prayer. Things good and bad happen, but it’s how you deal with those things that determines success or failure.
