Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Bubeck.
Nicholas, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi, my name is Nicholas and I am seven-years-old. When I was in Kindergarten, I founded my company, Creations by Nicholas. Now I’m in first grade and love being a CEO.
When the Coronavirus started in 2020, my mom told me to start a business. My mom wanted me to do something different during Covid and learn new skills during our time at home.
One day, mommy put out a bunch of crafts on our kitchen table- as I love art- and I ended up making an airplane. I thought it was pretty cool… and so did my baby brother. In fact, he took it from me, and so I made another BETTER one with neat features like wheels and a clip (that could hold a picture). And then… a lightbulb came off in my head; I said: “Hey mom… my business should be selling craft plane kits so kids could get creative during Covid.”
First, we thought of a business name, and decided on Creations by Nicholas. Mommy helped me buy a domain and build my website. I held the laptop, and mom guided me through making my site- we took pictures in our backyard and I even paid my brothers to help model!
I chose planes because I love to travel and some people can’t travel with all that’s going on. I wanted to create something that would help kids imagine they could go anywhere in the world (with my planes). Traveling with my family is my favorite thing to do, and my planes represent that.
My kits come with everything you need to build a craft plane. Once your kit arrives, you learn how to put them together by watching my DIY Video Tutorial on my website. Consider my kits an activity made by a kid, for a kid, and taught by a kid!
Once my website was live, family and friends started placing orders. It made me feel SO HAPPY! And then, I started getting a bunch of media people interested in interviewing me. I did tons of Zoom interviews for TV stations all over the country… I even went on Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, FOX News, E! and was featured in Forbes, InStyle, Real Simple Magazine and more. I love doing interviews- they’re so much fun! It makes me feel happy when media people interview me because I’m just a kid.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Many orders came in after my interview on Good Morning America and my inclusion in Real Simple Magazine; I became very busy all at once. I love getting orders, but I learned it takes a lot of work and a lot of time to own a company. While my family helped, it was really my responsibility to make sure all the kits were made. However, that “struggle” is also the best part of running my business; it means people support me and that makes my heart very happy.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My signature DIY Plane Kits include: popsicle sticks, corks, a bottle cap, a clip, working wooden wheels, and glue. I also have a colorful birthday-themed kit with a wish card, and I just launched a DIY Decorator’s Kit where you can make your plane unique with paint and stickers. I’m also super excited because I now offer accessories like a PYO (paint your own) pilot.
Because this started during covid, we created the Kits for Kids Program, giving free DIY Kits to kids whose parents are essential medical workers. I also donate $1 of every sale to the Triple Heart Foundation. The special foundation gives books to families in the NICU all over the country, and I was in the NICU, too.
I get messages from people all over the country saying they love my product and personality… and that makes me the proudest.
How do you define success?
My mom tells me success is doing what makes you happy.
