Rising Stars: Meet Melissa Harshman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Harshman.

Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I have been a cosmetologist for over 10 years. I attended beauty school shortly after high school. I have worked in upscale spas to fast-paced energetic salons. I found my true happiness in color and extensions.

I now specialize in both and continue to learn and grow with new trends. Not only do I offer extensions to my guest but I also train fellow stylists. I now own a private salon suite in Scottsdale and love every minute of it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road to where I’m at now, but I am grateful for the struggles along the way.

It has proven to me that no matter what has been thrown at me I am doing what I am meant to. The biggest struggle, as I’m sure is true for a lot of people, was at the start of the pandemic. The beauty industry as a whole was shut down. At the time, I had just moved to the Scottsdale area and was starting out from square one, again.

But I had faith and tremendous support from family so I jumped in. Despite the unpredictable circumstances and high risk, I’m happy to report that I made the right move.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in hair color and hair extensions. It’s a lot of tedious work but I enjoy it.

Color and extensions are customized to each guest so every day I am able to get creative with my work. I am most proud when my guest leaves happier and more confident. It’s never just about the hair, it’s about the connection I get to make with each guest.

What do you think about happiness?
I’m most happy when I’m finishing styling my guest’s hair. In the end when everything comes together and you can see the final outcome. It’s my ‘step back’ moment to enjoy and see my guest happy and confident with her new look.
