Rising Stars: Meet Lexi Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lexi Brown.

Hi Lexi, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I got started in the hair braiding business in 2013. An ex-coworker of mine asked me to apply a crochet style to her hair. She was gorgeous and popular.

She spread the word about me to her friends, they told their friends and BOOM! My small business started. That was in Jonesboro, GA. I moved to Phoenix about a year later and picked up where I left off there.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road.

A few struggles I encountered were thinking “Am I good enough?”

I had inconsistent clients who would book my services and not show up to their appointments, I had clients who wouldn’t like my work and asked for their money back, and sometimes I would just be burned out from the hustle and bustle trying to pay for food, necessities for my family and rent.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a hair braider, that’s my business. I specialize in box braids, knotless, and what we in the industry call classic or traditional braids. I’m known for the neatness of my braids, especially the small-sized braids.

I’m most proud of my growth and confidence. What sets me apart from other braiders is the consistency in my work. If there were ten different people with braids from 9 braiders and myself, you will be able to tell which braids I did.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory was Christmas in my hometown in 1992.

We moved to my family’s hometown in Caruthersville, MO. It snowed so much that year and my mother bought my siblings and me new bikes, it was the first Christmas I got to spend with cousins my own age.

It was just so beautiful!
