Hi Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, thanks for having me! I am Kate, founder of Eight One Social, a social media agency. I started my career in teaching, but since I can remember, social media marketing has always been a passion of mine.
When I made the transition from teaching to social media marketing, I started out with only a couple of clients. I found my strength in helping businesses grow organically through their social platforms, and I realized there was a real opportunity to create something. And that’s how I started Eight One Social.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. There are always highs and lows when starting a business. One of the more difficult decisions I had to make was not renewing a client’s contract. I had to say no to a client when their contract was up for renewal.
This was extremely hard for me to do; it felt like a sad breakup. I really enjoyed this client as a person, but the working relationship was no longer the right fit. As much as I want to make it work with each client, existing and potential, not all working relationships are meant to be.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
When people think of social media managers, the assumption can be that all we do is take a photo and post it to social media channels. However, there is far more that goes into every single post.
I spend time researching trends, reviewing analytics, planning content, and discussing with the client – all before anything is actually even created. There is A LOT of prep work involved. This job requires organization and a ton of behind-the-scenes work.
