Today we’d like to introduce you to Julio Suarez.
Julio, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was in High School they started to offer a graphic design class during my sophomore year because I needed to fill up my class schedule thinking that it would be a great class to goof around with. That class, though, ignited a passion in me for all things visual arts which led me to start doing a whole bunch of free projects for people while I was in high school in order to give me some experience in learning.
Eventually, I landed a job as a Creative Director for a non-profit out of El Paso, TX, and from there went on to have the opportunity to lead different creative teams and projects around the country.
Now, I am the senior graphic designer for CCV in the Valley, as well as run a business offering creative services, specializing in graphic design, for businesses and non-profits.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I definitely have faced challenges along the way. The creative industry is a big group of people, therefore, making it hard to stand out from the rest.
A lot of times we are all going after the same fish, which, if you are new in the game, can be frustrating when a more experienced designer gets picked from the bunch. But, all of that helped point me into specific niches in that I can really offer a good amount of value.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have done everything from being a filmmaker, graphic designer, and photographer, but I have recently narrowed my focus to graphic design and the occasional film project for clients I have had since before I made the change.
Clients usually come to me out of my ability to effectively be able to convey their message to their target audience with excellent and relevant visual design.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
More than luck, honestly, I think it has been a kindness to the people I interact with on a daily basis. That has allowed me to be able to create a fairly expansive network of people that feel comfortable referring people to me as a graphic designer.
