Rising Stars: Meet Joshua Rezende

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Rezende. 

Hi Joshua, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a kid, I’ve always loved art. However, as much passion as I had, I never seemed to be great at it. Drawing and painting never was my forte. As a teenager, I picked up a film camera and immediately felt something amazing. I shot film for 4 years, developing and even mounting my own photos. 

I slowly entered the digital space and fell in love with product photography. 

5 years of product photography, I wanted to keep pushing the boundaries of my achievements. 

Always being around cars, trucks, and motorcycles I decided to attempt automotive photography. I started a business called BlackTire media, an automotive photography business. Over my automotive photography career, I’ve shot for companies like Nissan, Volvo, Toyo Tires, and dozens of local Arizona companies. From my first vehicle to my 100th I’m obsessed. 2 years of dedication, I’m known to create wild composites that stand out above the rest. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a very hard path. I reached out to dozens of photographers and didn’t have anyone willing to give me any tips. I told myself regardless of how far I go in this field, I would always be willing to help my fellow photographers. 

Learning the skill was one thing, but being able to make money from it seemed impossible. 

I went door to door to every automotive business I could find and showed them what I do. Most told me no, but the few that gave me a chance still get work from me to this day- years later. 

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Automotive photography specializing in rare, exotic, and commercial vehicles. 

I’m known for complex composites (taking 20-30 images with off-camera flash and piecing them together) 

I’m most proud of what I’ve achieved in 2 years, and all the friendships I’ve made along the way. 

What sets me apart from the others is the style of photography I do. Most stick to natural light photography. I decided to approach it in a commercial style/ retouching aspect. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve never had great luck. Some would say I’m lucky, but often don’t get to see all the hard work and risks I’ve had to take to get here. 

What they might see as luck, I see as relentless persistence.
