Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Shaver.
Hi Jennifer, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my business, Fit with Shaver, in 2020. Fitness and wellness have always been a part of my life. As my kids were beginning their new adventures and about to leave for college, I decided to take my love of health/wellness and teaching and marry the two for my next adventure. I am a former middle school Spanish teacher who spent 18 years as a stay-at-home mom. Most of my mom’s time was spent volunteering for my kid’s activities. In 2020, I became a triple-certified health and wellness expert to teach midlife women how to manage perimenopause/menopause transition. Since then, I have helped time-crunched women prepare their bodies to age successfully through my monthly at-home strength training program, Strong for Life.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a challenging road. My college degree was in Spanish Education. I have had to learn how to run my own business. I don’t have a marketing, social media, or business background, so there has been a learning curve. As a lifelong learner, I have enjoyed learning new skills and continue to seek out others who are experts in these fields to help and learn from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I am very passionate about helping midlife women since I am one myself. I see so many women in my generation who have spent so much time caring for their families that they feel like they have lost track of their health needs. I love to show them how, even on the busiest of days, they can find some way to create healthy habits toward a healthier future. I always tell them if they fail to prepare, prepare to be frail.
What changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I hope the fitness industry moves towards being more inclusive to all. Instead of fighting amongst each other about which exercise is best or which workout is “the best.” We focus on getting everyone started with the movement and making it a part of their lifestyle. If we as an industry work on how we can get people moving that are not currently moving and keep them moving long-term, we can have a greater influence on the overall health of our communities. We can do this by encouraging movement at any time and starting with short increments, such as 15 minutes 3-5 days a week. This is a great starting point. We need to work together to build a strong foundation of daily movement first; then, we can focus on what types of movement produce the best results as we age.
