Rising Stars: Meet Jacqulyn Currey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacqulyn Currey

Hi Jacqulyn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business ownership mindset begins at the ripe age of 23. I was a stay-at-home mom to a beautiful little girl… In the hopes of not losing a sense of myself, I started researching things I liked to find something I could make a “side job” from. This led me down the road of photography. I had always loved shooting and had modeled off and on through my teens/early 20’s. What started as a small, money making hobby eventually grew into a 5 year photojournalism career for local publications and talent agencies. I loved photography, the events I got to shoot and the people I became good friends with along the way. Something was missing though…

When I was put on bedrest during my second pregnancy, I realized that shooting for me had become a way to make money. It wasn’t for the love of the lens anymore, it was for the creative direction of other people. After my daughter was born I decided I needed to change things up. I couldn’t be out till the early morning hours shooting concerts and events anymore. I wanted something that felt stabile, secure, and frankly, still felt like me.

Unlike before, I didn’t go through multiple possibilities of career choices. My future was decided on a whim. I woke up one morning and told my husband “I think I want to go to Aesthetics school”. He was a little confused at my abruptness but very supportive. I enjoyed skincare, treatments and makeup… this would be something that still fit who I was. I was enrolled that week and started school 2 months later, completed my Laser Certification and also became a Laser Safety Officer…. I haven’t looked back since!

It’s been 7 years since then. I’ve worked in facial plastics, liposuction contouring and high-end med spa facilities. This last year, I decided my next big step would be business ownership. Clarity Skin Lounge has been open 15 months now and I’m beyond grateful. My love and drive in this industry has only grown.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Business ownership is a scary beast! The first year is exhilarating, terrifying, joyful and slightly nauseating. I will admit, I have let negative thoughts creep in… “What if no one books? What if I can’t help someone? What if I can’t pay the bills? What if I get a poor review?”… As positive as I aim to be as a person, I still worry about these things from time to time. The truth is, especially in this industry, those are very real challenges. The Summer season is so slow in Arizona for most beauty related things. One way that I tried to prevent a collapse in my business was through building a solid clientele before jumping into business ownership. Unlike my photography business, I have a large overhead to support each month. I knew I could only be successful if I had enough clients to maintain that overhead. By the grace of God I’ve not only retained my clientele but grown significantly this last year as well.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in medically-focused aesthetic treatments and laser services. The difference between medical spas and day spas is that med spas perform advanced procedures like Laser, Microneedling and Chemical Peels (botox and filler as well, however, I am not licensed to perform those services). I am a Certified Acne Specialist as well and I truly love helping others regain their confidence after years of skin issues. Microneedle treatments, which involves creating a controlled wound to the skin to stimulate collagen and restore fibroblast banding, would be my all time favorite procedure. I have been fascinated with Microneedling research and techniques since I was still in school. I would say this, along with anything Laser related would by my niches. Laser fascinates me in a similar way to Microneedling treatments.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
A good vintage find, an iced green tea in the morning, a smile from my kids when they feel proud of themselves, my husband and his wheezy laugh, driving by myself with the music up, pasta, tearing up the dirt in my side-by-side…. happiness is a lovely state of mind and I try to keep myself there often. As I’ve gotten older and the days have grown shorter, I’ve realized our time on Earth is way too short to be spent sad.
