Rising Stars: Meet J White

Today we’d like to introduce you to J White.

J White

Thank you very much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I started playing Saxophone at age 10. I played in the Wind symphony and marching band and was eventually convinced to join the Jazz band in the 10th grade. I experienced what it felt like to improvise on my horn and have been hooked ever since. I went to college on a music scholarship and continued to play professionally after college in various bands until starting my band. I’ve pursued and worked in my music career my entire adult life. I’ve had corporate jobs and not-so-glamorous jobs in between. I’m finally living my destiny as a Recording Artist, entertainer, and producer/songwriter.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
It has been a challenging ride with pursuing a music career. I have lost jobs, moved my family to a new state across the country, and been rejected countless times in the music industry. However, when you know you are meant to do something and put in the work, you can always keep pushing and have confidence that others will eventually see what you already see and know.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Contemporary Jazz Saxophonist. Most of the time, you’ll see me on Alto or Soprano Sax. I write music that pleases the ears with grooves that the average listener can move to, relate to, and remember. Many people feel instrumental contemporary Jazz is background or elevator music, so I always aim to create melodies that people would pay attention to. What sets me apart is my authenticity on my live shows, my willingness to stay true to my sound, and my understanding that it’s all about the listener.

What were you like growing up?
I’ve been told I was too serious as a kid. However, those who know me know I’m playful and witty. I’ve always been curious. I’ve been into astronomy and science my entire life. I love the vastness and mystery of the universe. I’m also a huge sports fan. I played basketball growing up. My favorite sport to watch now is football, by far.
