Rising Stars: Meet Haley McCoy of Mesa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley McCoy.

Hi Haley, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I seemed to have been born with a hairstyling gene. As a small child I was constantly creating extravagant hairdo’s. Around 10 I started earning chore money and would purchase clip on ponytails and buy hair dye to color friends hair. As a teen, started buying loose hair and made extensions and Halos for myself and friends.
In college, at Paradise Valley Community College I was working toward becoming a dietician and I got hired at a wig store which worked with my school schedule.
I quickly fell in love with the alternative hair industry and couldn’t believe playing dress up with hair was a career, one artfully combined with loving and supporting women, building relationships, technical skills, and creativity. Wigs are of course, an art, not a science. The wig industry is also a ministry with many opportunities to do volunteer work and help others in need.
I opened my first wig store in 2013 and now am the sole owner of Designer Wig Outlet in Mesa AZ. My primary role is executive leadership of my management team, however I still work face to face with clients 18 hours a week as well as creating custom color orders in my flex time. Currently, thousands of women rely on Designer Wig Outlet to provide for their alternative hair needs.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I struggled with growth and scaling. As a younger and budding entrepreneur, I did not understand what it took to scale. The numbers were there, and the Valley was growing. In 2018, I opened a wig store in west Phoenix to grow to an East and a West location. I was burning the candle at both ends, driving back and forth. The West Valley store was leaking energy from our Mesa location which was absolutely exploding. When the virus hit, salons and stores were not able to function fully. This was a blessing in disguise for me, and I was able to close the west valley store and return my full focus to Mesa. Thankfully, because we provide such a niche product and service, women from all over the state drive to see us.

Each client has their own unique hair density and texture, as well as desired color. We can fully customize each hairpiece for the perfect match. Cutting, thinning, bangs, and layers are customized during the visit. If you need a smaller or larger size or snugger fit, our expert alterations are completed at no additional cost.
