Today we’d like to introduce you to George Luis Rodriguez.
Hi George Luis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been a professional wig stylist and have had my wig store for almost 6 years now
I didn’t originally seek out this path, I sort of found my way here out of necessity.
I use to work in purchasing in the medical field for 6 years in my very young adult work life but unfortunately that career abruptly ended due to a corporate buyout. I had built myself from the ground up and my experience alone unfortunately didn’t allow me to easily find a replacement job, as they type of position I worked in previous in many other settings required a bachelor’s in purchasing
Ironically, I went to school for music and only had/have an associates in art from my years in college… I went to college while working in purchasing and finished but I flipped my major so often after a few years of schooling I called it a day after final accumulating credits for my AA in art
So in between finishing school and losing my purchasing career I was at a crossroad
I had started performing and doing drag already and started to invest more time and energy into performing during this time… with drag it’s more than just performing, I was a jack of all trades and really had to worry about every aspect of a performance… from the performance, promotion, networking, and aesthetics which involved things like sewing out my outfits, doing my own makeup and styling my own wigs
That’s where my journey started
As I would go out and get bookings other drag artists (mainly drag queens) would ask me to style them wigs because they really liked my hair I did for myself
By the time I lost my purchasing job I had already had built some local buzz and a name for myself so I decided to take my wig business to the next level. I took $300 bought some wigs to style and resell… the rest is history
Well the “rest” is still ongoing and takes a lot of work
But since then I’ve been hitting the payment and building my brand online mainly through Instagram
I don’t have a storefront and exclusively sell and ship, unless you are local then you can come pickup or have your wig delivered personally by me
Anywho, I’ve accomplished a lot over the years. I’ve styled wigs for customers all over the world, just to name some places: Germany, Mexico, Canada, Africa, South Korea, Japan, UK, Paris, The Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark and many other places… among all over the USA
I’ve also have had my wigs on Rupaul’s Drag Race (multiple times, red carpets, music videos and even on Jerry Springer
It wows me to know my work has reached different corners of the world… especially places where I don’t even speak the country’s native language
It’s wild and humbling… writing this is making me tear up with emotion! I’ve accomplished so much in 5 years but it’s all in the name of honoring and harnessing my creativity. I have a need to create and be creative and this career I’m in currently is joy only my job but an outlet for my artistry
I actually went to school for music and that my biggest artistic passion in life. I don’t dare to peruse a career in music because I don’t want the public to judge my music. The music I write is verb personal to me and it scares me to release it to the public for consumption. I would much rather keep it personal, it’s more useful to me that way because its cathartic
Styling wigs is easier for me let go for the public’s consumption because I KNOW my wigs are gorgeous, there’s no debate! Music is more open to interpretation and that freaks me out, even though I love my music I make.
Sorry for the tangent but I feel that completely encapsulates where I am right now and how I started my wig career!
Oh and the reason my by business name is Georgina the Doll Wigs is because my stage name is Georgina the Doll. Georgina the doll comes from my lifelong hobby of collecting and loving dolls!
On a side note apart from wigs I am a professional doll collector and have been for about 13-14 years now and resell dolls as a side business. I am one half of Vintage Doll Hunters Timoteo & George. My partner and I are YouTubers and have a channel where we showcase dolls and educate people on vintage dolls!
Needless to say I am a very busy person
But that’s where I am at at the moment
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Never! Life is so unexpected, it’s all about adapting and working through the kinks. I attest my resilience to my tough attitude and persistence
I’ve had so many business related issues learning how to navigate running my own business but I’m a well organized and responsible person so even if I make a mistake I make a bigger effort to improve
I would say as a person who started from nothing that my future has been uncertain at times and still feels like that
My field of work is all about being appealing to customers and innovating so you offer unique products and stand out in this competitive market! That’s a constant struggle, having to push myself creatively… but I follow the best of my own drum so it’s not difficult but it is risky
My job as an influence in fashion and hair is to innovate, struggle is a strong word but I would say it’s a constant tango
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional wig stylist and have an online wig store
I specialize in styling custom lace front wigs. My main clientele are drag artists, so I create elaborate hair styles
That’s what I’m most known for and my line of luxury synthetic wigs. My collections are produced and designed by me and are super unique to the wig market
I’m most proud of the places I’ve reached with my wigs. I ship out and by extension I and my art have been all over the world. I’m world renowned and I very proud of that
People value my craft and art
What sets me apart is my style and innovation, no one does it like me. Not to be a drama queen but companies and other wig stylists try to doupe my products and copy my wig styles… but they aren’t up to par with my clean and sleek skills that worked very hard at to finesse and perfect… I think when people start to copy your products and style is an indicators that I’m not like others… that people appreciate my artistic point of view
