Rising Stars: Meet Emily Holzhauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Holzhauer.

Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I have always been drawn to skincare and have often been considered a bit “crunchy” or “hippie” by my friends and family. However, when I became pregnant with my first child, I truly started becoming more conscious of the ingredients and chemicals I was putting into and onto my body. Back then, people did not discuss or avoid these substances as openly as they do now.

During both of my pregnancies, I suffered from a rash called PUPPPS, which is painful, itchy, and not at all enjoyable. The only solution my doctors could prescribe was steroids, which I wanted to avoid at all costs. Considering that our skin is our largest organ and whatever we apply to it gets absorbed into our bodies, I began researching oils, essential oils, and herbs that could help alleviate my symptoms.

When my sister-in-law became pregnant and started looking for safe skincare products to use, I suggested tallow and a mixture of oils. This led us to try making our own tallow, and we loved it so much that we wanted to share our creation with others. Thus, Tatanka Tallow Co. was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe that whenever you start a business, there can be bumps in the road. However, for the most part, I would say we have been very blessed, and things have gone pretty smoothly for us. Our community has welcomed us with open arms.

The biggest struggle we have faced while starting Tatanka Tallow Co. has been trying to convince people of the benefits of Tallow’s skincare products. One noteworthy benefit of Tallow in skincare is that it closely resembles the structure of our skin’s natural oils, making it an excellent moisturizer. Additionally, tallow is rich in vitamins and nutrients, which contribute to healthier and more radiant skin.

As the self-proclaimed herbalist and a co-owner of Tatanka Tallow Co, I take great pride in developing innovative essential oil blends for our skin creams and lotions, as we abstain from using artificial fragrances.

Furthermore, I am passionate about discovering novel methods to incorporate herbs that can effectively address various skin concerns.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that honesty and transparency are crucial to our success at Tatanka Tallow Co.
