Rising Stars: Meet Emily Heller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Heller.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Growing produce and flowers in the low desert is both challenging and delightful, and it is meaningful to participate in the local food economy even as a small-scale producer. I began growing commercially after completing Beginning Farmer programs in Maricopa and Pinal counties. I started bringing my produce to Uptown Farmers Market and loved connecting with people about locally grown.

I discovered that I was passionate about growing varieties that were delicious, beautiful — and unusual. I also learned that people not only want high-quality produce but they also are eager to know who grew it and the methods used. I do not use sprays or chemicals and strive to grow successfully by taking care of the soil and producing healthy, strong plants. Farming is my third professional career. It is satisfying to feed people with good food and lovely flowers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I produce my crops on multiple plots of leased land, which is a significant challenge. Access to quality farmland is a big obstacle to the production of local food. Cash flow for most farmers is an issue and that applies to me, too.

Proceeds from every sale go towards the purchase of supplies and equipment.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m proud to have built a business selling my produce and flowers at a farmers’ market and to local restaurants and bakeries. I grow my produce using organic methods and I offer varieties that are delicious, beautiful, and unusual.

I’m proud that I’ve created a base of regular customers who seem to delight in my specialty produce. It’s exciting to surprise people with new things that they will enjoy. I have been selling at Uptown Farmers Market Saturdays in Phoenix since 2016. I’m also proud to connect with and share knowledge with my market customers. Part of my display includes high-quality reference material that everyone can use to become more successful in their own gardens.

What are your plans for the future?
I am working on a plan to expand at one of my locations. That will help me grow even more produce and flowers.
