Rising Stars: Meet BXMMY

Today we’d like to introduce you to BXMMY.

Hi BXMMY, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since a young age, I have always had a passion for the arts. I started competitive dance and spent years performing.

During high school, I started writing poetry, and after leaving dance, I started attending open mics to share my spoken word pieces. I slowly started to recognize that I could turn these pieces into songs so easily. I started recording music in the studio during my senior year of high school and eventually booked my first opening show in 2018. Since then, I have performed at over 60 events.

I was able to develop my sound more and I found that sharing my stories started to help my fans through their toughest times. This is what motivated me to keep working, no matter what I was going through. I released my first single “Best that I Can” in 2020 and released my second single “Distant Dreams” in April of 2022. Now, I am working on an EP that I will be releasing at the end of the year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This has been a really rough road, in all honesty. I feel that I had to prove myself so much more being a female artist in a community that was mostly male-dominated at the time. I worked so hard to convince people that I was “worthy”. I started to realize this mindset changed my perspective on who I was as an artist and I started to make music that just “fit the mold”. In 2019, I was diagnosed with epilepsy and had to take some time away from music. I started getting severe anxiety which also exacerbated my PTSD and it was very difficult to focus my mind on writing.

It was during this time that I started to self-reflect and figure out what I wanted my message to be. After my time off, I started to record the music that I actually wanted to make and since then I have been able to share with my supporters that mental illness and disabilities do not define who we are as people or our capabilities. Without these obstacles, I wouldn’t be the artist that I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a well-rounded artist, in every aspect. I started with dance when I was younger and competed up until the age of 16. I also fell in love with poetry and painting during middle school and started doing open mics in high school. After leaving the competition dance, I still felt the music inside of me and realized that with my writing abilities my words could easily be turned into music.

I started writing music seriously at the age of 16 and have not stopped since. I would say that my biggest specialty overall is writing and being able to spread positive messages and love within the community. I feel this is what makes me different from others is that what I do is solely driven by passion and heart. I’m not an artist for the money, fame, or accolades- but to help others realize that being themselves is good enough, to give back to my community, and to inspire the youth to do whatever their hearts desire.

Any big plans?
Looking down the line, I have three main goals I am working towards. One Would be the ability to share my art worldwide.

I am also currently working towards my degree in criminal justice and with my education, I am looking to open a victim advocacy center in Arizona to provide an outlet, services, and support for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and those battling mental illness. I would also love to be an advocate and speaker for the Epilepsy Foundation as the community is so large but so unknown.
