Today we’d like to introduce you to Brettany Kontz.
Hi Brettany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always loved baking and would bake pies and cakes during the holidays when I was younger. I went to culinary school and started to work in bakeries. I absolutely loved the last bakery I worked in and learned so much from the owners. After a few years there, I left to be a stay-at-home mom but would occasionally bake cakes from home. I slowly started to take orders and over the years have gained amazing customers who challenge me with every order and design. It has been an amazing journey and can’t wait to see where I will be in a few years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
With everything, it takes a lot of practice and patients. Things still go wrong. Some struggles is just getting my business known, but I have amazing people who recommend me and that helps when business is slow.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make everything homemade, made to order. I make mostly cakes. I also make cupcakes, cake pops, cakesicles, cookies, Macarons, meringues, pies, chocolate-covered strawberries, coco bombs, and recently chocolate breakables (heart-shaped chocolate shell filled with candy/treats that you break open).
I am proud of every cake I make, almost every cake I do is a new design and a new challenge that I love. One of my favorites to make is a piñata cake.
I take care in everything I make and do. Everything is from scratch, my frostings, fillings, pie crusts, etc. A lot of recipes I have worked on and changed a lot to get to my liking, but I cherish the family recipes that have been passed down generations. Baking is truly a passion of mine.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
For mentors, I had amazing boss’ at my last bakery, who showed me a lot. My pastry chefs were great, and finding your own technique comes out what you have learned from everyone and your mistakes.
Having a good relationship with your clients and having friends and family promote me has been incredible. I had my cousin help run my Instagram and get my business known and out there.
