Rising Stars: Meet April Denning

Today we’d like to introduce you to April Denning.

Hi April, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Of course! In 2017, I moved to a new city in Michigan (my home state) and as one typically does when they are new to a city, I said yes to pretty much everything I was invited to!

That led me to my first yoga class. I’d taken a handful of classes years before, but it never really stuck for me. This time was different. I have never felt freer and empowered in a movement-based practice before. So, I leaned really hard into those feelings and the rest is history.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
What is a road without a few bumps, right?

It took me a while to get where I’m at today, and I still have a ways to go. I never really knew if I’d be the person teaching others the practice of yoga, having the natural doubts and fears that one would have to take the path less traveled. It’s funny when I sit here and think about it because I’ve realized I was the only one holding me back.

Once I started taking little leaps of faith, everything started to fall into place at the exact time and way it should. Funny how those things work sometimes. So, once I realized I needed to get out of my own way a little and learn how to share my passion with others I’ve been really grateful for the opportunities that continue to come my way.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a yoga teacher!! I’ve been practicing consistently since 2017 and received my 200 hours in 2019. I’ve been teaching since 2020. As a yoga instructor, my teaching style varies as I continue to adapt to new environments, students, and specialties. This practice is something I’m insanely passionate about. I always strive to make yoga accessible for all ages, genders, levels, and demographics.

I can teach anywhere from a powerful vinyasa-based flow to the yummiest of yin classes! I’m available for 1:1, small group gatherings, and big events! Those who are looking to strengthen or develop an inversion practice, I got you too! Most recently I’ve been partnering with local breweries around the city to teach super fun yoga events, such as “Bend and Brews” meaning we flow at the brewery, and enjoy a beer together after! All are included with your ticket. It’s been such a blast.

I am really most proud of stepping into this role and out of my comfort zone. I couldn’t do this without the most amazing community showing up for themselves and their practice.

I think what sets me apart from others is my approach to yoga. Although I do honor and utilize the traditional yoga style, I bring a modern taste to it with the acknowledgment that nobody is the same, and we honor that with each and every practice. My goal is to always help you find a practice that works for your body, so you continue to come back to your mat.

Stay on the lookout for my first donation-based yoga flow. The class will be held at Metta yoga, and all proceeds will go to Almost There Rescue! aprildenningyoga.com.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
How absolutely terrified I am of public speaking! Every time I step on my mat to teach I work through it. Some days are a breeze, and others are not. We just gotta ride the wave sometimes.

I also do other things too! I moved here from Michigan to spend more time outside. Hiking and rock climbing are some of my favorite hobbies!
