Anna, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My academic journey began with pursuing two bachelor’s degrees, which laid a strong foundation in my chosen fields of study. Building on this solid base, I advanced my education with a master’s degree in biomedical science from Geisinger Medical School. This experience allowed me to delve deeply into complex biomedical topics and conduct significant research.

Demonstrating my commitment to medicine, I successfully took the MCAT and was accepted into medical school, marking a pivotal step in my path to becoming a physician.

Alongside my academic achievements, I also distinguished myself as a published author. My research on opioid misuse in pregnant women has contributed valuable insights to the field, highlighting my dedication to addressing critical issues in healthcare.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Getting into medical school wasn’t a smooth road for me. I faced numerous challenges and setbacks along the way, from rigorous exams to competitive admissions processes. At times, it felt like the obstacles were overwhelming, but I persevered through each struggle. My determination and passion for medicine kept me focused, allowing me to overcome these hurdles and ultimately achieve my goal.

One of the aspects I’m most proud of is my published research on this topic. It’s not just about the academic achievement but also about the potential real-world impact. My work has helped raise awareness and contribute to the development of better healthcare practices and policies for vulnerable populations.

What sets me apart is my combination of academic rigor and practical application. I’ve managed to bridge the gap between research and clinical practice, ensuring that my findings are not only theoretical but also actionable. My dedication to addressing pressing issues in healthcare, particularly those that intersect with complex social and medical challenges, drives me to continually strive for meaningful contributions in my field.

Overall, my work is characterized by a commitment to making a difference, a focus on impactful research, and a drive to improve patient care through both academic and practical applications.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I see risk-taking as an essential part of growth and progress. Throughout my journey, I’ve faced several situations that required me to take significant risks. For instance, deciding to pursue a master’s degree in biomedical science was a major leap. It involved not only a financial investment but also a commitment of time and energy, and it meant stepping out of my comfort zone.

Another risk was choosing to focus my research on opioid misuse in pregnant women. This area of study is both challenging and sensitive, but I believed in its importance and the potential impact it could have on public health. Publishing research in this field required me to navigate complex issues and confront difficult questions, but it was a risk worth taking for the potential benefits.

To me, risk is about weighing the potential rewards against the uncertainties. I believe that taking calculated risks can lead to significant personal and professional growth. While not every risk pays off as hoped, each one teaches valuable lessons and often opens doors to new opportunities.
