We’re looking forward to introducing you to Portia Ishmon. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Portia, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Who are you learning from right now?
In Wealth Management, I’m continuously learning directly from Vice Presidents and top leaders across the financial industry — the minds behind some of the most trusted programs and products available. This hands-on collaboration allows me to serve my clients as their Personal CFO, offering tailored strategies and access to the best financial tools on the market.
In Operations Management, I’m fortunate to learn from innovators at one of the world’s leading media companies, where I focus on integrating AI and emerging technologies into strategic processes. My goal is to design smarter, more efficient systems — because at my core, I’m a Fixer, passionate about building solutions that create lasting impact.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Portia Ishmon, Founder and CEO of BOLDHer Wealth Management and Consulting LLC. We help individuals, families, and organizations transform how they approach financial and operational excellence.
I serve as a Personal CFO—guiding clients through wealth protection, growth, and legacy planning with strategic life insurance and retirement solutions. I start every engagement with financial education, because true legacy begins with understanding. When people grasp how money actually works, they make decisions that reflect their deepest goals and values.
I partner with schools and organizations to strengthen their operational backbone. We refine workflows, streamline systems, and build infrastructure that lasts. Whether it’s improving daily processes or architecting long-term strategy, we help leaders operate with clarity and deliver exceptional value to those they serve.
My work spans two worlds—personal wealth and institutional effectiveness—but it’s rooted in one belief: sustainable success requires strong systems. Financial or operational, every system we build is designed to advance growth, equity, and long-term impact.
What sets BOLDHer apart is our commitment to building foundations, not just solving surface-level challenges. We bring innovation, empathy, and strategic insight to every partnership, helping people and organizations move forward with boldness, efficiency, and purpose.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed that success meant working hard until you’re old enough to retire — that fulfillment only came after decades of grinding. Now I know that’s not true. I’ve learned that I can build a life where I help people, create impact, and earn abundantly at the same time. I don’t have to wait until retirement to truly live — I can design a career and lifestyle that align with my purpose right now.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: everything happens for a reason. God has a divine path already laid out for you, even when you can’t see it yet. Every challenge, every delay, and every detour is shaping you into the strongest version of yourself — the woman you were always meant to become. You’re being prepared to walk boldly in your purpose and to build a legacy that empowers others to do the same.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes — the public version of me is the real me. There is no “on stage” and “off stage.” What you see is who I am. especially because I don’t believe in filters online or in real life. You see I may where certain clothes, look a certain way and a lot of people may prejudge me but I have soo many layers it would take millenniums to learn all there is to know.
I don’t shrink, filter, or soften myself to be more digestible.
I know I’m judged — not just for being a woman, but for being a Black, queer, bold, unbothered-by-their-comfort-level kind of woman.
And I still choose to show up exactly as I am — because my existence is the example.
I refuse to dim my voice, my presence, or my identity just to make the world feel safer.
I lead out loud so other women — especially the ones who look like me, love like me, and disrupt like me — know they don’t have to ask for permission to be whole.
Authenticity isn’t my brand.
It’s my rebellion.
It’s my freedom.
And it’s the invitation I extend to every person reading.
Be real, be loud, be fully you — and let the world adjust.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
People will misunderstand my legacy because they’ll assume it was handed to me — when the truth is, I built it from nothing but a vision, a prayer, and the kind of grit you can’t teach.
Nothing about my success was inherited, gifted, or guaranteed. I didn’t come from wealth, connections, or a safety net. I had to become the blueprint I never saw.
For a long time, I thought I was building this for the people who raised me — to make them proud, to show them I could protect and multiply what they worked for. But the reality is, some people will benefit from what you build without ever caring how you built it — and I had to learn to let that go.
So now, I build for the legacy I choose, not the validation I hoped for.
I build for the family I’m creating with my wife — the one we’re designing with intention, love, and generational strategy.
I build for the people coming after us who won’t have to start from zero.
I build so the next Black, queer, first-gen wealth creator sees proof that it can be done — and done loudly.
My legacy wasn’t given.
It was earned — through faith, refusal, and consistency when no one was clapping.
And yes — having a partner who believed with me, not just in me, changed everything. We didn’t just build wealth — we built a foundation for a future we own.
That’s the real legacy:
Not what I leave behind — but what I build forward.
