Meet Zhoné Lashay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zhoné Lashay.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Zhone. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a self-taught freelance makeup artist and creative director. I specialize in beauty, showcasing sisterhood and the beauty of the black woman. I put together concepts, I book with local models other muas and photographer(s), find locations for the shoot(s), plan hairstyles and wardrobe, etc. When I took my first client back in 2016, I was not getting any clientele I would have like to have. One day, I thought to myself it would be amazing to create a photo shoot to showcase my artistry on a model. From there, I have gained a great following and a good support system for my make up skills and the skill to put together a photo shoot and create something amazing. I am known for creating powerful eye-catching concepts that move my supporters. I can create multi-colored eyeshadow looks, editorial makeup, Halloween make up, you name it. My amazing talent has brought me to meet celebrity makeup artist, videographers, designers, and photographers. One day, I will get myself deeper into the industry and make a bigger name and brand for myself.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I definitely take every photo shoot as a learning experience. I have experienced so many no shows, weather issues with photo shoots, wardrobe malfunctions, you name it I probably have been through it. In the end, I have always found a way to get around any obstacles and create something amazing!

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Back in 2015, I started diving into makeup hard. I loved how I could make my own rules for my art. I would use my makeup time as therapeutic sessions, blending for hours creating looks that challenged me and made me want to go to the next level. I started doing makeup on my friends and family, hearing encouraging words on how I could make it a lifetime career. From there, I started creating shoots to promote myself as an MUA. I created eye-catching content to showcase my make up skills and the skill to bring amazing artist together to promote ourselves. I slowly have built a name for myself in the industry locally. Social media has been such a big help with meeting different creatives and collaborating with a phenomenal artist. I am most proud of how I stand by my work, I do not back down because of what society or outsiders have to say. I stand my ground and will continue to be my own competition and reach for the stars.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
My proudest moment was being on style exhibition glam squad under Jalia Pettis and Gilbert Tellez for designer Nazila Sawhney. She hosted a charitable fashion show for her organization the Untold Stories Foundation on September 28, 2018. That was the first fashion show I had ever done makeup for. It was challenging but also a learning experience to have done makeup in the timeframe that I had but also getting to experience behind the scenes of a huge fashion show like that. I loved every minute of it.
