Today we’d like to introduce you to Zaris Adonis.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been around music my whole life and from a really young age, I started singing. I was influenced by a lot of artists in my lifetime from heavy hitters like Mariah Carey, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder Chaka Kahn to amazing underground talent from Durand Bernarr Rachelle Ferrell Lalah Hathaway, and Chanté Moore. After high school, I got into music production/composition, songwriting, and music business and started to focus on my artistry and connecting with other artists in the community who have been a great part of my journey thus far which has helped me get to this point of my career as an independent artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely been a tough road for me growing up I was very different from most of my peers and it was challenging to find myself. I never got the support that I needed to really flourish in my music career and at a young age, I was not encouraged to sing. Most times, I would be ridiculed and from the time I was 13 to 18 years old, I had completely stopped singing, my voice had changed and I fell into a very deep depression because it was the only thing that made me feel great about myself and it was a way to express my feelings and I previously had been dealing with self-esteem issues, so just adding that really took a toll on me and even when I did get back into singing, I still had some people and some crowds not responding to my artistry the way I wanted to like they would with some of the more mainstream people.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
Well, I’m a singer-songwriter and producer and I carry a lot of hats in my career from being my own A&R, manager, to artist developer; but I guess you can say my specialty is vocal production. I have a lot of fun layering vocals composing different vocal styles to making something sound refreshing and it’s something I really take pride in as being a vocalist; having the ability to sing and create what I like to call ear candy to the listeners. Something else I feel I specialize in would definitely be my lyricism in my music. I really like to tell the stories of not only my life but other people’s lives who I feel can relate to what I’ve gone through and give a voice to the voiceless; and when I really look at my journey in building my artistry, it makes me proud that I’ve been able to be the leading component of my creative process, have full ownership of it and be inspiring to other up and coming artist. I feel what really sets me apart from others is my absolute love for music and being out of the box and eclectic. I love how I fuse different genres together to make a new genre. I also, take risks which is what I feel most artists don’t do enough.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do think it’s a great place to start if you’re serious about your craft as an artist. There are so many great people here that I’ve been fortunate to connect with who have either introduced me to different crowds or who have given me opportunities to further thrive in my music career; and I would recommend Phoenix, Arizona as a starting point just so the artist can you feel comfortable performing and networking with other people which is what I had to do and continue to do as of now. But I will say from my experience, I wish more singers like myself were in the limelight because it can be kind of intimidating promoting yourself in a market where it’s mainly either rock ‘n’ roll or hip-hop dominated but if you’re secure with your talent, then skies the limit.
