Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvonne Mahoney King.
Yvonne Mahoney King was first introduced to art by her high school Studio Art teacher over 40 years ago. That was her introduction to the many forms of art and realizing that she had a creative spirit within, She has explored many art forms throughout the years.
Born in Chicago, Illinois and later has become a transplant in Arizona at the age of 53, Yvonne found Fluid Art different from the normal painting technique through watching YouTube videos called Fluid Art painting.
This form of painting presented itself as Art Therapy. It was intriguing and seemed so easy that she decided to give it a try. Now, a little over two years and over 300 paintings later, this therapy/hobby has turned into a passion of unique creations.
Fluid Acrylic Painting is a technique of mixing acrylic paint colors with the right amounts of different components to create fluid works of art on canvas. Each art piece is unique and abstract by nature.
“I have always had a hand on some type of art creation from jewelry pieces, 3D Art sculptures, crafts, and photography, but the fluid Art painting is my favorite. This form of painting and creating is a release for me; a relaxing meditation from my day to day work.”
“All of my Artworks are reflections of the beauty of Spirit and the Light from within me, and I want to share it with the world.”
You can find Yvonne – YMK Creations at the Mesa Art Festival (Downtown Mesa) where you can meet, view and purchase some of these unique artworks during the fall/winter months. During the summer, look for Yvonne teaching the basics of Fluid Art at the Michael’s in Tempe Marketplace.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles of calling what I do a “hobby” is what I as an artist contends with. The paintings I like, I want to keep, but I only have so much wall space and my husband stresses out when I start to make more and take up space with them drying.
Working a full-time job and finding the best avenues to present the “hobby artwork” is, and has been challenging too.
When I decided to start selling some of my paintings at art fairs, I had a few criticisms of my pricing being too low, However, I don’t like to put a huge price tag on my art pieces for a good reason. I’m the type of artist who welcomes repeat customers and I want to make my art affordable for a person who’s admiring my work, so much that they want to take it home with them on the day they see it.
I have tried selling some of my art on in online storefront shops, which take a lot of time because it’s more about the selling and marketing aspect of the product instead of making beautiful creations and meeting people who love them, I prefer creating and meeting people face to face.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I am constantly adding new styles to my artwork and it is always different. I use Neon Colors as well as Glow-in-the-Dark paint in typography with uplifting messages that are relatable.
With a lot of people doing Fluid Art/Pour Art/Paint Pours, as some may call it, it’s not as easy as some may think. You have to know color combinations that compliment each other, paint viscosity and when to stop the manipulation on the canvas to get a great result. There is a bit of science to the art. I have often redone paintings when they don’t look interesting to me. I do have a standard in what I like to present.
I have also ventured into digital art with some of my painting designs and have online design storefronts with ShopVIDA.com and Curioos.com.
I have taught some Basic Fluid Art Classes at Michael’s at Tempe Marketplace this summer, which was very fun for me and the groups. This form of painting can be very freeing and will bring out the hidden artist within.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I finally deiced to present at the Downtown Mesa Festival of the Arts and people really loved my art pieces.
