Today we’d like to introduce you to Yvette Andrade Chavarria.
Yvette, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Since I was a young girl I knew that I was passionate about food, event planning, and business. I grew up in a community that was filled with a strong sense of culture, Mexican cuisine, and amazing flavors. My mother was a big part of why food and cooking became an interest of mine. She always cooked fresh homemade meals for us and never used frozen foods as substitutes. Although she never forced me into learning, I would sit and watch her cook as I passionately took mental notes. She was my initial inspiration.
In my early teens, I took a course that would teach me the fundamentals of business management. I was then recognized with an alumni award for the completion of my entrepreneurship program. With my passion for cooking and completing my business course, I knew that I would one day take it to the next level and start something of my own. Although I was only 15 years old my heart desired and hungered to get my feet wet.
I then decided I would help my moms friend with her small business, I remember loving the concept of food services and taking orders. I then started experimenting with pastries which led me to make cheesecakes topped with fresh fruit. It was a total hit and people kept asking for more, I was overjoyed by all the support and loved keeping myself busy doing something that my heart desired. As I became an adult my priorities changed, life introduced me to my amazing husband and later I became a mother to three girls.
Although my life was completely occupied I felt that I wasn’t living up to my work expectations, I felt that something was missing, I knew exactly what it was but I continued to make excuses in not investing time and effort into building my business. At the time I was working nights at a hospital. I was completely overwhelmed, always tired and fatigue. I wasn’t living a happy life but I knew that I had needs to work.
It was about ten years later that I moved to a different hospital that started falling apart, business was not as good as they anticipated and one miraculous morning I reported to work only to find out that I was being laid off. That morning 70 of us lost our jobs. I was devastated to learn that I was unemployed, I knew this loss would be a financial burden to my family but as strong as I’ve always been I knew that I wasn’t in control, I knew that God would provide one way or another. I clearly remember driving home that day in tears as I prayed for strength.
Weeks later, I learned a big lesson, sometimes your biggest blessings are disguised through pain, discomfort, and suffering, It was then that I understood that I had lost my job for a bigger purpose. This was my beginning, this was that moment where I had to put my fears aside and no longer allow my self-doubt to control me. I knew that I had to take the first step in creating my brand, using my talents and passions and allow myself to share them with the world.
My husband has always been my #1 fan and talked me into taking the first steps to start my small business. I then decided to take this leap of fate. With all the love and support of friends and family, we quickly bloomed, word of mouth and social media have played a big role in our success. It didn’t take to long for me to finally realize that I was in a happy place doing what I absolutely love. Everyone has a unique talent that we should not waste.
We all have something very special to contribute and share with the world. Within any Industry that you choose, I strongly believe in supporting one another as small business owners because competition or comparison is never an option. Believe in yourself, stand firm in what you believe in and always expose the extraordinary character found within you. Even when confronted by struggles, conflict, criticism, and combat, you will only rise strong when you are determined to win the battle.
Trust the business building process, I once read a spiritual quote that really stood out, It had my attention and it planted a seed in my heart and mind, “It’s hard to get in shape spiritually if you only work out on Sunday’s.” This concept can really be applied to anything that you practice in life, whether it’s a stronger fitness life, healthier living approach, spiritual growth or creating a business.
You have to be dedicated, passionate, work tirelessly and absolutely LOVE what you do in order to grow. I’m completely humbled by this God-given gift, I’m determined use my talent to bring a positive impact to those in need and remain humble through this journey.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think every business is confronted by obstacles and challenges, it’s simply part of the process. Even the most successful entrepreneurs have faced situations that have hit rock bottom.
When you’re proactive and determined you will do anything within your power to rise and have a stronger comeback.
