Meet Wyatt Howland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wyatt Howland.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in my parents record stores in Southern California. The art on albums, posters and shirts inspired me to teach myself to draw and paint. At a young age I began to go to the tattoo shops near the record stores and I admired the early mid-century American designs. I began getting tattooed when I was 15 and when I was 18 I began tattooing other people.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint in the same application as the tattooers from the early 1900s painted designs for their trade. Simple and almost folky designs that can represent a victory or a heartbreak. In me they evoke a sentimental feeling that I can only describe as pure classic American heritage. Stripping a design down, taking away all the bells and whistles to make a timeless image that carries powerful context is what I aim to do. I hope people see the same charm in these old-style designs that I do

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Do what you feel is right and things will work out. Money doesn’t make good art

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’ve never done an official art show. Most of my art is not displayed with the exception of my paintings that I make for the tattoo trade. Those are displayed at the golden rule tattoo. I also display my work at tattoo conventions that I work. I put a small amount of what I paint on Instagram but prefer it to be viewed in person
